I actually figured on #2 as the biggest reason.

Make a bowl at Kansas, hell go ahead and win an Orange Bowl at Kansas, and they'll fire your ass if a couple of pussies get upset about skinned palms during bear-crawls (jesus, who enjoys bearcrawls? Everyone hates those things; we suck it up and do 'em anyway).

Kansas will remain a basketball school, no matter what. They'll give you pretty decent support if you're winning big, but it won't be rabid and they'll turn on you in a heartbeat.

WSU, OTOH, will give you more rope if you can give them just an inkling of success. Give them a lot of success and they'll treat you like a God.

I almost wonder if the Mangino mess wasn't a greater detriment than the Gill one. Gill was a disaster; his firing was justified. Mangino, OTOH, got completely ****ed over. The precedent was set - be colorful and have a bad year, and we'll axe your ass. Leach may not have wanted to walk into that environment.

You might have a point there. Especially since Leach and Mangino were good buddies going back to their days as coaches on 2000 OU Championship team.

Yup.

If a close friend of mine that I came up in the professional ranks with (and who I share many personality traits with) got nationally butt****ed by his employer, I probably wouldn't be eager to work there. Especially if same employer then then proceeded to piss on his rotting corpse to save themselves a few dollars after cutting him off at the knees.

The way they handled the entire Mangino affair could haunt them for awhile. In all honesty, it probably should.
