Re-Signing Brandon Carr: What Do You Do

There's about four more week of football ahead of us.

We've managed to wrap up Brandon Flowers during the season, Tamba Hali this offseason, DJ and Jamaal Charles last offseason...

This offseason, we have two very important players hitting free agency, and one franchise tag.

The tag goes to Bowe, no sweat. It's impossible to find franchise WRs, and when you have one, you must keep it. He's Top 10 at his position. Carr, for all his talent, is not. He's maybe top 25.

But what would you do if:

Carr (or, more likely, his agent) knows Carr is bound to be drastically overpaid on the free agent market, as young talent almost always is.

He knows the Chiefs desperately want Carr to stay on board. And the Chiefs have no leverage to keep him on board because their franchise tag is tied up with Bowe.

So knowing he has ALL the leverage in this situation, Carr opens big:

"I want 5 years, $50 million, $22 million guaranteed.

Just like my teammate, Brandon Flowers." (And other top flight corners like Johnathan Joseph, who got almost the exact same deal.)

You can haggle with Carr, but keep in mind, you're incredibly time-pressured, and Carr knows he has the leverage here. Even if you get him to come down, it's going to be nickels and dimes lower, not much else.

Do you (a.) sign Carr to a damn near identical deal to Brandon Flowers, or (b.)let Carr walk and just collect the 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick next year.

That's likely going to be our options at this point, folks.

Poll forthcoming.

Yep.

Everybody just assumes Flowers is the far superior corner but if you look at how they've played this year, you could easily say Carr has had the better year.

The guy is young, big, fast & can play. Furthermore it's at one of the most crucial positions on the field.

It's so easy. Just pay him and be happy with your corner play for the next 5 years.

He's not the number 2 at all. Mentioned it earlier in the thread - other teams consider him our #1.

Exactly.

As I knew he was.

He has all the leverage. The Chiefs have nothing to threaten him with, like the franchise tag, and they don't want to tie up $100 million in their starting corners.

Nor should they. This is just one of those business decisions where you have to take the lesser of two bad roads:

1. Let him walk.

2. Pay your starting corners $100 million.

I vote to let him walk, given those choices. There are good corners you can find on the market, the draft is loaded in the first three rounds, Jalil Brown has starter upside, and Travis Daniels and Javier Arenas can man the position for another year should we find ourselves in a tough spot.

It sucks, but you can't have every present under the Christmas Tree.

If you do that you better hope Flowers can play on the right side.

Right now, Carr is about as good as Asamaughua ever was. Lots of passes broken up and throws opposite him, but not a flashy guy that gambles for interceptions.

He is also a homebody for the most part, and a well grounded person.

About the most boring guy to follow on twitter.

Truth be told, if I was told we had to choose between he and Bowe to keep long term, I'm waving goodbye to Bowe.

If we let him walk, we will have to face him twice a year because he will be signed by an AFCW team...bank on it.

Good Corners don't grow on trees. Considering the amount of cap space this team has, there is no excuse to not tie him him. Rookie Qb's come dirt cheap, so by the time our hopefully franchise QB is rdy for his second contract, Carr & Flowers will be up and probably on the downside of their career.

If they let him walk, then we just have another ****ing hole to fill.

There is no good reason to not pay the man. None. Don't care how you slice it. And don't give me this "100M Locked up corners" BS.

How much do we have locked up on DE's? How much money did they throw at a broke dick Qb?

Too much money for corners....pffff.....yeah ****ing right....

That didn't stop the Eagles from buying two legit #1's.

We don't get nothing if Carr walks. We end up most likely with a 4th round compensatory pick in 2012. That's not nothing. We're also not having to invest $100 million in our starting corners, which limits our flexibility once we have to get up to that mandatory cap.

In addition to that, you can actually draft corners in several places throughout the draft and land a starter, unlike other positions. Carr himself was a 5th rounder.

Plus we do have serviceable corners right now with Arenas and Daniels. I'm not suggesting either of them are shutdown #2s (Arenas is developing nicely in the slot, though...) but that assures we won't have an empty cupboard should we lose Carr.

In addition, Jalil Brown with a full offseason has really great upside..

We'll see.

Edit: It'd be 2013.

I'd rather have Carr, a legit #1 Corner than a 4th rounder that might not even make the team. What else are you going to spend the money on? I mean Really. 30 Million freaking dollars of cap space and money is your #1 concern? Pfffff....

I doubt the Chiefs resign Carr, that I can agree with, that doesn't make them right though. If money is a concern then they should just cut Cassel And Jackson.

Boom! Problem Solved. I'd rather have Carr than either of those bastards.

Like I said, I don't care how you slice it, there is NO reason for Carr not to be resigned.

the most likely scenario going into next season (which will continue to piss most of us off) is that this team will still be x amount of dollars under the cap (you dont have to spend that 90 percent until the following season right?), they will make no splash in FA like the prior 3 seasons, they will have this team lack of talent and most importantly lack of depth, and we will go into season 4 with the same shitter players in depth spots so if we are hit by the injury bug again we are ****ed.

only this time since in house contracts are starting to end, we will begin to lose players, in this case Carr is the first one up in what could be one of many guys they will not dump money into.

Say we don't sign him. Do you have a player or position you would throw the money at that Carr would have signed for?

Probably. I was scanning expiring contracts for this upcoming offseason and there are a couple tackles and a few wide receivers I'd be happy to load the Chiefs up with. If Miami somehow lets Kendall Langford or Paul Soliai go, I'd throw $50 million at either.

Carl Nicks from NO if he gets outta there or Ben Grubbs at LG.

However I'd resign Carr first. You gotta lock up home grown talent.

****ing awesome. I doubt they will get anything done during the season, however. Conducting business during the season is bad form, imo.
