Chiefs Would it be a mistake to fire Todd Haley? - Page 50

I started the year in full support of Haley. This team was developing into one of the better teams in football and were young across the board...despite being handcuffed to Matt Cassel. The growth in almost all of our young talent was apparent and easily recognizable.

His fiery attitude is infectious and the team plays with that emotion and passion. Haleys motivational skills are up there with about anyones.

For that, I was willing to overlook his mismanagement of situational football and a few other deficiencies that come with a first time coach and assumed that he would improve in those areas, with experience.

This is one hell of a hard season to judge because of the lack of an offseason. I am willing to give him a partial pass on the early part of the schedule because I still believe it was the right plan if we are looking at the long term big picture. It just sucks that we coincidentally ran into the injury bug at crucial positions early on.

All that said, his offense is embarrassing to watch while Romeos defense is seemingly entering GOD mode without, arguably, its best player. Everyone on earth (sans Haley, seemingly) can see that Palko has no place in the NFL and Haley is seemingly OK with betting half the year on him. I dont understand what Haley sees from a quarterback that has the weakest arm Ive ever seen in the NFL.

I still think that Haley deserves a shot at it with a real quarterback. This team is giving good effort and I think most agree it would be a contender with a real quarterback. Who could have this team in position to contend with these quarterbacks (Im not even gonna touch the Stanzi situation)?

I guess the way we deal with the remaining 4 games plays a lot into this, but at this point I think it would be a mistake to fire Haley either during or after this year, but I can see why someone would disagree with that opinion and thats why I want to see how a poll on this topic shakes out.

Do YOU think it would be a mistake to fire Todd Haley and replace him prior to next year?

No. Not anymore. Haley is in over his head. He is not gonna get help from his GM either. It was not wise to hire a first-time GM and HC for the rebuild. Since Clark is not gonna fire Pioli, then Haley needs to go.

Yeah, I don't see how Stanzi does anything but benefit from actually playing against NFL competition. And it's not like there would be huge expectations from him.

He could go out and put up a stat line EXACTLY like Palko's today and 90% of the fan base would be ok with it because he's not Cassel or Palko.

Thats a good point. Haley is hurting himself by sticking with Palko. Atleast if Stanzi was showing signs Haley could unofficially say "hey if I ever had a real QB we could be good."

I do know that sometimes coaches can be wrong, and even without the benefit of seeing practice, fans can be right.

For instance, we all knew that there was no way in hell that Jamaal Charles could do worse than Larry Johnson in '09.

How so? Did he not hook Palko last game for Orton, even though he'd only been on the team for a little over a week? It's clear that for some reason, he doesn't believe Stanzi can or should start. This has less to do with Palko and more to do with Stanzi.

Apparently, the team disagrees. Because they played really damn hard against New England, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. Today was the first game with Palko starting where the team didn't seem to rally behind their QB. Granted, that should have been the no-brainer time to put Stanzi in. But again, we have ZERO idea why Stanzi hasn't made his way into the starting lineup yet. Haley is usually not afraid to play a young guy over a veteran.

He didn't pull Palko. They put Orton in and proceeded to run a FLEA FLICKER. They didn't put him in there in a position to potentially succeed because then they might actually have to play him.

You need to re-read my post. I never said the guys weren't trying behind Palko - they absolutely are.

And if they'll play for a guy that needs a HAIL MARY to actually score a passing TD, they'll damn sure play for Stanzi. Your excuse that starting Stanzi signals the end of the season is bogus, plain and simple.

Haley runs a ton of quick screens. He almost never goes for it on 4th down with Palko. And on every 3rd and long, he either runs the ball or runs a short route. Pretty clear that the coaching is well aware of his limitations.

I think marching a veteran backup sends a different signal than marching out an unexperienced rookie from the scout team when your team is still on the bubble.

Charles got enough carries as he deserved last year. And who's going to replace Wiegmann? Pioli short-handed Haley on offensive linemen, so Wiegmann's replacement has had to spend the entire year prepping to play Guard.
