I sprung for one of those fancy little heart monitors. Now I stop whenever I get above my 90% rate (roughly above 170) and I get back in when I'm somewhere in the 150's. Aside from all that safety garbage, this might be a solid undeniable way to track my progress, if it starts to take a lot longer to get the rate up too high, then I know the cardio's working.
