Apple store being sued for invisible door
That issue is at the heart of a lawsuit filed against Apple this week by an 83-year-old grandmother who injured herself in December on her way inside a Long Island, New York Apple store. Failing to distinguish the store’s signature glass architecture from, apparently, the surrounding parking lot, Evelyn Paswall smacked, face first, into the door and broke her nose. She is suing for $1 million in medical expenses and punitive damages for negligence “in allowing a clear, see-through glass wall and/or door to exist without proper warning.”
Before all of you jumping up and down about human stupidity, remember years ago the old lady who was burnt by the MacDonald hot coffee? Well, does this grandma have a case? Link:http://www.minyanville.com/dailyfeed...als&from=yahoo |

$1 million wouldn't even cover the costs of the health care she received over that broken nose, she should ask for more IMO

It'll be dismissed. The door will claim it felt threatened and just stood its ground.

If I worked at the Apple store, I'd be hoping this happened once a week, absolutely.

Speaking of the McDonald's lawsuit, I just read the true story on that case. It is said that the coffee the customer drank was literally at boiling temperature and that it the customer had to have throat surgery, etc from the drink.

The lady who was burned by the McDonald's coffee actually had a really good case and shouldn't be mocked. This dumb old bat who walked into the door does not.

I found it odd that she sued, but ... I've had coffee before from places that amazed me with how incredibly hot it was. I have a high threshold for hot and if I have to wait 10 minutes to be able to drink a small sip, it's too damn hot.

Not just that, but McDonald's internal memos revealed 700 complaints about severe coffee burns. The execs analyzed that it was just 1 for every 24 million cups of coffee, so it would be easier to fight and settle with the people who got hurt than to lower the temperature a bit. The jury was a little pissed about that.

I think originally the award was $2 mil, but it had been reduced to around $400k.

There should be some governing body whose only job is to go and throwout BS frivolous lawsuits.
What's their main criteria? If you're being a dumbass, you waive your right to sue. |

They tried to settle for 100 grand, but McDonald's opted to go to court. The jury awarded about 2.9 million (around 150 grand or so compensatory, 2.7 million punitives), and the award later got cut down to something like 600 or 700 grand.
The lady had 3rd degree burns over 6% of her body when her slacks melted into her skin, she was really, legitimately injured in this incident.
