A Mock That Has Tannehill Falling to 11

I found this 1st round mock at The Football Palace:

1. Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
2. Washington Redskins - Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor

Stevo and I agreed that the first two picks were obvious.

3. Minnesota Vikings - Matt Kalil, LT, USC

We talked about how even though the Vikings have said they're showing interest in other players, what kind of cover 2 team takes a cornerback third overall? Kalil is the better prospect, and won't bust even if his run blocking isn't quite as pro ready as his pass blocking game.

4. Cleveland Browns - Trent Richardson, HB, Alabama
5. Tampa Bay Bucs - Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Cleveland really likes Richardson and probably won't change their minds. Because of this selection, Claiborne is the only real choice for Tampa. If Richardson and Kalil were both going to fall, they might instead look at one of the WR's.

6. St. Louis Rams - Fletcher Cox, DT, Miss State
Stevo and I argued on this a bit, he acknowledged that the Rams would see the deep DT class and figure they could get a guy later, but I figure that Cox might be the guy on top of their board and he's not worth passing on. When in doubt, go to the BPA.

7. Jacksonville Jags - Stephon Gimore, CB, South Carolina
What do we know about the Jags draft startegy? They avoid character issues, they take reaches if they fit their wants, and they like long term starters. Rules out WR for the most part, and Gilmore is a guy their high on. This fits the criterion of a Jaguars pick.

8. Miami Dolphins - Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
Stevo: here's the thing for Miami
. They have an at least, serviceable QB in Matt Moore, in a contract year
Tannehill is obviously too raw to start this year
so if they take Tannehill
at the end of this season they have no new information
so if they pass on him, they can get Blackmon, Floyd, whoever, and be in a position to address the posiition with Barkley or Jones next year.

9. Carolina Panthers - Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
Floyd really falls into the Gut pick category. He's high on draft boards, fills a big need for Carolina, and is definitely rising to the occasion of the pick.

10. Buffalo Bills - Riley Reiff, LT, Iowa
A lot of the Big Midwest tackles get knocked for not being athletic enough, or having short arms, but a lot of prospects like Jake Long, Joe Thomas and Bryan Bulaga have shown evidence against these sorts of generalizations. Reiff is a great player and fills in the big fix they need.

11. Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
Kuechly and the other prospects worthy of this selection don't fit, and the Chiefs don't like Cassel. They might make this move to get rid of him quickly.

12. Seattle Seahawks - Luke Kuechly, MLB, Boston College
We were stumped with this pick, the Hawks have a lot of options, but having Barrett Ruud start at Middle Linebacker is the worst thing they could do.

13. Arizona Cardinals - Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina
His versatility makes him a great fit for the Cardinals defense. Probably high on their draft board, and too good to pass up.

14. Dallas Cowboys - Mark Barron, SS, Alabama
The Cowboys have a lot of options, but the defensive backfield is a big gaping hole of suck. Barron should fix that, far and away the best safety in the draft.

15. Philadelphia Eagles - Michael Brockers, DT, LSU
*Simultaneously* Michael Brockers. That was easy.

16. New York Jets - Brandon Weeden, QB, Oklahoma...
Ok, just kidding.

16. New York Jets - Nick Perry, DE, USC
The Jets need pass rush bad, and of the prospects available, Perry is the best available.

17. Cincinnati Bengals - David DeCastro, G, Stanford
The Bengals guards are shit, and a replacement is a necessary thing. Obvious choice.

18. San Diego Chargers - Dre 'not Fitzpatrick', CB, Alabama
The Chargers might consider offensive line with Dielman retiring and Clary being a piece of shit... but Clary runs the team, they need corner so that's where they go.

19. Chicago Bears - Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
The Bears are taking the defensive lineman highest on their board. Coples just makes sense.

20. Tennessee Titans - Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse
So many options, Konz might be too early, DT might be a stretch, but DE fills an obvious hole, and Chandler Jones is looking like a quick rising first round prospect. He fits the 4-3 like a glove.

21. Cincinnati Bengals - Courtney Upshaw, DE, Alabama
The Bengals are apparently infatuated with Upshaw, Lewis likes his potential and though this might be considered a fall, he's still a first round caliber player.

22. Cleveland Browns - Johnatahn Martin, OT, Stanford
Oniel Cousins is their Right Tackle, not Tony Pashos. This pick makes more sense than a WR or DE at the moment.

23. Detroit Lions - Dontari Poe, DT...

Ok I should stop that.

23. Detroit Lions - Cordy Glenn, G/T, Georgia
Even if he's not filling in immediately at Left Tackle, he helps the line anywhere you put him, and keep Stafford on his feet.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers - Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama
We did not see a reason to subvert common opinion. Unless a real special prospect fell to them, Hightower is the likely solution. Pass Rusher is a maybe, but only if a guy like Ingram made an astronomical fall.

25. Denver Broncos - Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
Peyton runs the show, so a DT like Worthy or Still is 100% out of the question. However, WR is not and Kendall Wright is the best WR here. Hill has potential, but Wright is known good.

26. Houston Texans - Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech
We debated between Mercilus and Hill here, but the Texans are deliberately straightforward in their draft method so they want to get offensive weapons. That gives the edge to Hill.

27. New England Patriots - Shea McClellin, OLB/DE, Boise State
The Patriots want to grab guys who can fit any scheme, and McClellin has the versatility that they're looking for. We think it's a bit of a reach, but that doesn't stop the Pats from getting the prospects they want.

28. Green Bay Packers - Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Illinois
The DL can wait a while longer, another pass rusher opposite Mathews is a must with the way they're flying of the board.

29. Baltimore Ravens - Dontari Poe, DL, Memphis
The Ravens M.O. is to grab the guys who fall to them. Jimmy Smith, Michael Oher, Dontari Poe is no different. There may be some question marks about him, but the Ravens are the team to take a chance on him.

30. San Francisco 49ers - Andre Branch, DE, Clemson
There are not a lot of ways the 49ers can go here without looking silly. Branch's best fit is in the 3-4, and playing with Aldon Smith should make them a scary duo in the future.

31. New England Patriots - Devon Still, DE/DT, Penn State
This pick makes a lot of sense, if the Pats stick around to make it. The Defense still needs help, and there isn't a burner WR worth taking at this point in time. Harrison Smith could also be an option.

32. New York Giants - Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
Essentially, the front 7 is off the board. Baby Cromartie and Pot Smoker Adams might not be worth it to the Giants highbrau organization. Konz makes sense because the Giants Oline is terrible, and Konz can immediately step in and whip that line into shape.

Tannehill will either go in the top 8, or he is going to tumble.

If the Dolphins pass on him, nobody's going to want him for a while.

It's 4 slots. And trading away a Day 2 pick for a player that they brought in for a visit.

I'm not sure it'll happen, but I certainly won't be surprised if it does.

You don't think the Chiefs would take him if he were there at 11?

I don't know. Pete Carroll is supposedly enamored with him. They didn't sign Flynn to big money so Pete might hedge his bet and take Tannehill.

If the Dolphins, who know him by far better than everybody else, choose not to take him at 8, it's the biggest red light you can get.

Teams at 9 through 25 would be leery at that point.

The Chiefs would go with a better bet.

Again, any team that bases their picks off of what the Dolphins do is reeruned. The Dolphins are the worst run team in the NFL right now.

Charlie Casserly said he likes Tannehill better than he did Flacco and Freeman coming out of college. This guy get some respect for taking Mario Williams over Reggie Bush.

Once again, I point out that the decision is not Mike Sherman's.

Should the Dolphins pass on Tannehill, that does not necessarily reflect his opinion of Tannehill.

National media would just blow this off, but this will be huge in KC if the Chiefs select a first round QB for the first time since 1983.

I think that presupposes that Mike Sherman couldn't be wrong about the kid. I've heard that over and over this off-season and I just don't buy it. He knows him as well as anybody, but that hardly means his judgment is infallible. More importantly, Sherman isn't the HC. He may be standing on top of a chair screaming for the kid at 8, but he won't exactly have veto power if the HC or GM wants to go another way.

I would judge Tannehill solely on his own merit as a player.
Trying to read into what Sherman thinks or doesn't...is guesswork at best.

Moving heaven and earth it would be my friend. There is NO WAY Pioli trades up to 7 to get a QB that started 19 games. He is from the "Parcells" tree of thinking on a QB.

If Tannehill slips to #11, KC has a shot, but they will not move up to get him. From what I am hearing, KC is valuing players like Barron, Decastro and Kuechly above Tannehill.

I'd bet Tannehill doesn't make it past the Eagles, even if Miami passes on him.

I just listened to an interview with Ryan Tannehill. He couldn't have been more dull and uninspiring if he tried. A QB has to be a leader of men. It's tough to listen to any leader that's less interesting than watching paint dry. Tannehill was already iffy to me because of his limited time as a QB after starting as a WR. That interview definitely lowered his stock even further for me.

I'd rather trade out of the 11 spot if he falls to us.
