Tamba Hali has excelled in the 4-3. Pioli brought the 4-3 to KC. That doesn't mean Pioli gets credit for Hali's success. It's not like Pioli hand picked a defensive scheme to maximize Tamba Hali. He picked a defense that he wanted regardless of who was on the team (see Glenn Dorsey). It just hapens that it was a better fit for Hali. Same goes for DJ. His rise isn't the payoff of some master plan. Todd Haley didn't get a HC job because Pioli thought he'd get the most out of Derrick Johnson. To suggest as much requires a mind bottling suspension of common sense. The statement was that most of our talent was already here before Pioli. That is fact without question. Pioli has drafted Berry, a bunch of guys that we believe have potential, and a 2 first round dlineman in an attempt to justify his choice in defensive schemes. That's a lot more maybes than anything else, with one sure thing mixed in. And right now his legacy in KC is a shitty w/l record with a bunch of promising young players obtained through a rebuilding process that Herm and Peterson did the dirty work for.

I guess we can argue over what constitutes "talent" in the context of the conversation. To me, outside of Berry and perhaps Breaston, the stars of this team were already in place. Everyone else you listed is a combination of JAGs and maybes.

Except that Arrington was Pro Bowl/All Pro his first three years in the league. It took DJ seven years. So actually they are not the same. One had success out of the gate and the other is finally reaching potential on the backend of his career. Their "on their way out of the league stories" are not the same at all based on their talent level of play. |

I love your selective memory. DJ was probably the most disappointing draft pick on the team at the time Pioli took over.
He was a train wreck that showed flashes at times. I thought for sure he was going to wash out and be done. DJ even admitted later that he hadn't been very focused and had some off field issues effecting him. He was looking like a bust. The urban myth is that because you make videos and post 1,000 times a day it means you have a clue about what you are talking about. |

Didn't people want him traded for a 3rd rounder?

The idea that he was a total bust is not true.

Yes, because at the time Haley had him playing 2nd and 3rd string, and the thinking was "if he isn't going to get on the field, get something for him."

What's your point? Dorsey, Albert and Bowe were massively overweight...that's a clear sign of laziness. DJ was a borderline starter. Hali was topped out as an average pass rusher that was a rag doll in run support. The corners were talented, but needed coaching to get where they are today. Charles flashed elite talent late 2008 as a rookie, but he was injury prone, small and fumbled a lot. Some of you have very select memories about how poor that 2008 team was. IMO the only guys that were directed stars when Pioli took over were Bowe Flowers Everyone else needed a major overhaul to get where they are now. |

And you can't say those guys wouldn't have improved under another coaching staff.
