2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

Does anybody have insight on Adalberto Mondesi? He is Raul's son and turns 17 next week. He has been playing well Idaho.
Also, Colin Rodgers is a 18 year old with a WHIP of .68 and opponents BA of .125 through limited innings in 5 starts this year playing in Burlington.

Odorizzi is not on the same schedule as Sanchez was and had pitched recently. Verdugo was already on the 40-man roster, Odorizzi isn't. And it's possible they still don't think Odorizzi is ready. The guy IS having trouble working deep into games. Part of that might be mitigated with a better defense working behind him, but there's no guarantee. I am ready for Myers to be up... yesterday. I'm not surprised that Odorizzi is a little behind. With pitchers, I think it's better long-term to leave them down too long rather than promoting too soon. Also, Will Smith has been dominant since returning to Omaha (ERA just over 3, which is great for that league, 37: 9 K:BB, 8.76 K/9, 1.25 WHIP), especially in his last four starts. I think he probably deserves a second look, maybe even before Odorizzi. The biggest thing is that his K/9 has skyrocketed since his return, while his BB rate has decreased. That means, to me, he's throwing BETTER strikes and commanding the ball better. It's not like the kid has overpowering stuff (even at the AAA, his stuff is just 'OK') I'd like to see Smith get a long shot in the MLB rotation soon.

Very advanced with the bat, slick with the glove (and likely to stick at SS). He hasn't been quite as impressive as Jurickson Profar's debut (he started in the midwest league - short season A vs. rookie ball for Mondesi), but I think it is in that same area code.

Of the guys we have gotten in return only 1 guy has put in any meaningful time with the club, and he's just now developing into a good player. Waaaaay too early to call it a complete win. If OrderEZ turns into a good pitcher, and Cain turns into a good CFer... do we call it a huge win for us at that point even? Getting 3 good ML players for 1 superstar? I dunno if I call that an hands down landslide deal for KC... if one of these guys turns into a superstar.. just One... then I'll feel like we got even return at the very least....

No, it is a complete win. I will take a stud, defensive SS like Escobar who I run out there everyday over a stud pitcher that I am going to run out there once every 5 days. SS's, great defensive SS's are a rare commodity. Escobar's defense alone gives us the win on that trade. The fact he is hitting over .300 makes it just that much sweeter. |
