Moving advice

Dear Chiefsplanet...

I am moving to Illinois and have a, basically, brand new queen size mattress and box that was very expensive and I do not want to leave behind or sell for $0.60 on the $1. I got a few quotes for shipping rates and they are all over $300 and come from some pretty seedy shipping companies.

I don't need to rent a moving truck as all of my stuff easily fits into my 2002 Audi Allroad (with a sturdy luggage rack on top) and don't need to pay $800 + gas for a Uhaul + towing (for my car) rental.

Basically, I want to get this queen size bed and box to Illinois (800 miles) without getting pulled over for dangerous hauling (or whatever it may be) and with the mattress arriving in 1 piece in good condition. My friends seem to think with a tarp and several ratchet straps it would be more than safe on my luggage rack, but man...I just don't see it nor am I good with this stuff.

If anyone has any experience in this sort of thing or has some advice or anything...maybe even instructions on how to do this without ****ing my car up, my mattress up, and putting an entire interstate of other cars in danger...I would be greatly appreciative.

Go Chiefs,

Spoiler!

Drain the water out of it first. It'll become lighter.

mother ****ers, it'll cost, according to the uhaul website, around $250 for them to JUST INSTALL the necessary means for me to even be able to haul a trailer (without even renting one to begin with)...

it would be cheaper for me to just light the mattress on fire and buy a new one if I go that route.

if we are definitely ruling out the luggage racks on top...not a good idea at all?

I just returned from a 1 week vacation in Destin and my budget doesn't really allow for me to sell a $1000 mattress for $200 and then buy another $1000 mattress after moving across country again and shelling out 1st/last and another security deposit

Sell the mattress for $200, buy a $50 piece of foam to sleep on for a few months until you can afford a nicer mattress.

There you have it. Old slap stick Hootie may have a little bonus DNA on the thing, but it's not like he hasn't had dealings with numerous STDs before.
