KU gives Bill Self contract extension through 2021-22

Even if Kansas never thought Bill Self had wandering eyes when it comes to other jobs, it never hurts to express gratitude and confidence with a contract extension.

KU announced Friday afternoon that Self’s current deal would be extended by four years through the 2021-22 season.

The new contract comes with a yearly salary increase of $480,000, bringing Self’s annual compensation to $3.856 million if he remains coach for the entire length of the new deal.

“We believe Bill Self is among a very small number of elite basketball coaches in this country,” KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger said in a statement released by the school, “and this ensures that we compensate him accordingly. We are proud of the way he represents the University of Kansas, Kansas Athletics and the entire State of Kansas, and we are thrilled that he will remain our coach for at least another decade.”

The deal includes retention bonuses of $876,000 that are payable in 2013 and 2018 if Self stays with the Jayhawks through those dates.

The second retention bonus is replaced in 2019 by an agreement to pay Self a one-time sum of $6 million if he remains the KU coach through the 2022 season.

Other incentives in the contract: $200,000 for a national championship, $150,000 for a Final Four appearance, $100,000 for being voted AP coach of the year, $50,000 for a regular-season conference championship and $25,000 for a conference tournament championship.

Smart move by KU, and the university will end up having to examine the contract again, as Self will be underpaid in a couple of years.

Nevertheless, he's one of the best coaches in the country, and it's smart to do everything within reason to show that he's much appreciated by his school.
