Matt Cassel reportedly losing support among Chiefs

Matt Cassel reportedly losing support among Chiefs

With four subpar games under his belt, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel is catching heat for the team's ugly 1-3 start.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported the fourth-year starter is "losing confidence from players and many others in the organization." If Kansas City had someone more intriguing than Brady Quinn at the No. 2 spot, Cassel would be destined for the bench, according to Cole.

"Look, there's a big reason why they went after Peyton Manning as hard as they did this offseason," Cole was told by a source with knowledge of team president Scott Pioli's thinking. "What you're seeing from Cassel is pretty much what was expected. He's a really nice backup, not a starter."

Cassel has struggled with just five touchdowns against seven interceptions. His 70.4 quarterback rating exceeds only that of Mark Sanchez, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden and Jay Cutler.

Chants for Quinn and third-string sensation Ricky Stanzi bubbled up at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday during the Chiefs' 37-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers, but a switch at quarterback would require Pioli to admit defeat after years of insisting Cassel, his personal pick under center, had the goods. Cassel's 19-24 record has frustrated fans, as have his struggles against some of the league's weaker defenses this season. Cassel littered the field with three interceptions in Sunday's loss, but Romeo isn't budging.

"I could have taken (running back Jamaal) Charles out because of his struggles and his problems, but he's also the one who can run for a touchdown," Crennel said. "(Those are) some of the decisions a head coach has to make and you have to go with your gut feeling, and what you know about your team and then move forward with it."

What Crennel also knows about his team is that inserting Quinn into the starting role won't solve a larger problem in Kansas City. With young talent on both sides of the ball, the Chiefs were an enticing pick in the AFC West before the season. Finding out you don't have a quarterback, however, tugs the entire operation back to square one.

Romeo should have taken Cassel out because he sucks.

Romeo should have taken Charles out in the 4th quarter because it was completely out of reach to win, unnecessary to put the extra pointless hits on his body and would have been a good place to get some field experience for Gray.

The WR's should be losing confidence, because Cassel is going to get them all hurt.

No way Bowe signs back here next year.

Um, JC scored 2 TDs, Romeo.

How much longer before the rest of the team quits on RAC?

Agree, but at least the seed is planted. And on NFL.com, not just in local media. This story will grow like Jack's beanstalk.

The ironic thing is in "protecting" Cassel, Pioli has done more harm than good. He will NEVER be able to lead the team again once he's replaced.

This organization doesn't seem to get it.

I'M NOT PAYING A DIME TO WATCH CASSEL QB THIS TEAM.

I don't care that we lose by 35 instead of 21 if he's benched. If he's the best we've got, and you idiots locked us into this situation because of that, that's YOUR ****ing fault.

We are tired of seeing the same suck every ****ing week. I will not pay to watch you waste our time repeating the same mistake every game. Perhaps Quinn isn't the best QB on this team. Fine.

Perhaps he turns into the best QB by the end of the season. Perhaps he leads the league in INT's. We don't know.

What we do know is exactly what we'll get after 4 years with Ca$$hole...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).
