While Brady is no doubt a huge part of NE's success... Belichick deserves credit for putting him in there. Its easy to say now but he left Brady in over a 1st overall $100 million QB. A lot of coaches wouldn't have done that... especially after Bledsoe won the AFC championship. I know most of the armchair GMs here wouldn't have done it. Not for a 6th round guy.

Cause winning a superbowl with a final drive is totally not as good as and AFC title game. Where is milkman to call a dumbass when you need him

He'd call you a dumbass because until Hoodie benched the 1st round franchise QB there was no Lombardi...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Quality post here. You proved my point for me. You're absolutely right, winning a Super Bowl is better than an AFC title game. Belichick went into that first Super Bowl having to decide between their 1st round, $100 million QB with Super Bowl experience who had just won them the AFC title game over the Steelers after Brady got hurt... or the green 6th round QB with one playoff win... the Tuck Rule game, and he was lucky to win that.

As much as people may want to thrash and scream and cry, the whole thing happened because of Belichick. You have to remember that Bledsoe signed the richest contract in NFL history the previous offseason. What Belichick did took balls. I think there are very few guys who would bench a $100 million QB, or the richest QB in the game... and there are plenty of coaches who believe starters can't lose their job due to injury. Or people who have egos too big to do what Belichick did. Brady may very well be the Patriot way... but he created it because Belichick didn't let his ego get in the way of winning games.

If you're 0-2 with Bledsoe and 11-3 with Brady, and then Brady wins a playoff game you'd have BALLS to put Bledsoe back in. This is a no brainer...

Brady was knocked out early in the AFC Championship... Bledsoe came in and did well enough to win on the road in Pittsburgh. Spin it any way you want, there was a legitimate debate at the time about who should start the Super Bowl. It's easy to pass judgment in hindsight knowing what Brady went on to do. But if you start a 6th round QB over a 1st round pick who has the biggest contract in football... you better be right.

Brady didn't win the AFC Championship, Bledsoe did. Brady got injured.

Not by himself. Patriots were winning 7-3 when Brady got hurt, and had completed a long(ish) pass to Troy Brown. It was in the 2nd quarter.

And I agree that Bledsoe definitely helped win the game, but everyone forgets that he made one of the most asinine throws I've ever seen in that game too -- throwing it blindly over his head backwards when he got turned around and was about to be sacked. In a massive defensive struggle he begged for a pick six that could've swung the game.

Still, it's revisionist history to suggest that Belichick had an "easy" decision or anything of the sort.

The unwritten rule is that a starter doesn't lose his job to injury. BB deserves credit for thumbing his nose at tradition...

You have no idea how split the fan base up here was over that SB decision. To me it was a no brainer for Brady, but many here thought otherwise. And by many, I mean MANY!
