Who knew Daniel Tosh was a Stan the Man fan? From his twitter account.

I am paraphrasing something I heard today on the radio but it was something like this.
When asked once who the better ballplayer was between DiMaggio and Musial, Bill James responded " Its ridiculous anyone would even think DiMaggio is even in the same league as Musial". The question was spawned by DiMAggio's insistence that anytime he was introduced at a function it was as "The Greatest Living Ballplayer". Another good one - "No man has ever been a perfect ballplayer. Stan Musial, however, is the closest to being perfect in the game today....He plays as hard when his club is away out in front of a game as he does when they're just a run or two behind."—Ty Cobb, Life Magazine, 1952 |

I read the article in the KC Star this morning. I thought it was kind of silly to say that "the most amazing statistic of all" was that Musial had the same number of hits at home as on the road.
Really? THAT'S what Pete Grathoff (the author of the article) took from Stan Musial's career? A little statistical oddity like that was the most amazing statistic? I'd think that striking out only 18 times in over 700 plate appearances in 1943 is more amazing. I'd also think hitting 5 home runs in a doubleheader and whole bunch of other things he did are far more amazing than getting the same number of hits at home as on the road. That's a pretty "meh" statistic as far as I'm concerned. |

Thanks... My Dad actually got an invitation to come try out with the big club at one point, but things were different back then. He would have had to quit his job with the FEC railroad to do it, and back then good jobs weren't that easy to come by. With two young daughters (my older sisters) at home, he just couldn't take the chance. Now if he had played on the Cards with Stan the Man, that would have been way, way cool! |

My dad had an opportunity to play in the Cards minor league system in 1950. The same week he was going to sign, he got drafted and was evenutally sent to Korea. He was in the Army 24th Division, trained at Camp Chaffee in Ft. Smith, AR. Came home, got married, got a job. He was a big baseball fan until the A's left KC (he hated Charlie Finley) and then the Chiefs became his favorite sport after that. He followed the Royals but the Chiefs were his passion. Baseball Strike where the WS was cancelled really pissed him off too. He basically quit following baseball after that.

So yeah, unless you were a real star who was sure to play in the majors some day, it wasn't worth giving up a decent job for a very slim chance at the majors when playing minor league ball would never pay your bills. |

From I believe Mays book.... Mays, McCovey and some other black players are playing cards before the ALL Star game. White players are not speaking to them or welcoming in any way. Stan the man just walked up, sit down and started playing cards with the black players. Talking to them and cutting up just like they had know each other for years. Seems like a little thing now but back then, it was a big deal.

I am going to miss Stan The Man. He was as good of a person as you could ever meet. He was a great ambassador for the Cardinals and baseball everywhere he went. He was a champion as a player and as a man. I am grateful our paths crossed in life. - Bobby Bell
