Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

If the Chiefs take Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher No. 1 overall, it won't be to play RT whether Branden Albert traded or not. Nobody does that

Now there was a point when Gruden was talking to him about there being bloggers out there just waiting for him to make his 1st mistake in the NFL and writing this like "See, I told you Joeckel sucks!"

My son and I both laughed out loud and said "ChiefsPlanet" at the same time.

They're also not the ones trying to trade an above-average player to create a hole at that position and fill it with the first overall pick in the draft.

The best things you can say about Joeckel vs. Albert (in order):

1) He's cheaper!
2) He's younger!
3) He might be slightly better!

Spending 1.1 to save 2.5 million a year for the next four years and maybe have a slight upgrade at the position (even at LT) is pretty 'meh.'

But sure they could. If you're trying to get a player to see that other teams won't pay what he's asking either, that's exactly what you'd do. Isn't that what you hope is happening, and that Dorsey isn't really serious about trading him?

But with all due respect to TBG, no one else anywhere has said the trade has been agreed to.

Being willing to pay him and "have agreed to a long term deal" are two different things.

Also, the guy (Ian Rapoport) reporting that Miami is willing to pay Albert is being contradicted by everyone else reporting on the story, all of whom say Albert is asking for too much money.

And Rapoport is saying the trade hasn't gone through because KC hasn't agreed to the compensation. So your two examples cancel each other out. They can't both be right.

There's no way they would agree to a trade, let Miami work out a contract with Albert, and then just not announce it because they're hoping for something better. If you're hoping for something better, you don't agree to a trade.

There's also no way Miami works out a trade for Albert, works out a contract, KC doesn't pull the trigger on it, and then Miami suddenly realizes that their staff has A&M connections and, holy shit, we've been working out this trade for Albert and we really should have been working a trade for Joeckel.

I mean, come on.
IMO, you're right. BossChief mistranslated TBG. TBG speculated that terms for a trade were probably agreed to when it looked like Albert was going to Miami for a physical. He never said anything about thinking that terms had to be agreed to before the Chiefs would give Miami permission to talk to Albert's agent as far as I know. The fact that the Chiefs reportedly haven't given Miami permission to meet directly with Albert suggests that a deal isn't hammered out yet.

We might if we end up drafting Joeckel or Fisher and Miami does not trade for BA like we all hope they do.

this is so annoying

they wouldn't be drafting a right tackle at 1.1

they would be playing the left tackle they drafted at 1.1 at right tackle for a year before they move him to left tackle.

several OT's have gotten their feet wet at RT before moving to LT

people around here just scream RT at 1.1 so they can bitch and bleed all over the place ... they enjoy it.

They could try to trade up for Johnson which costs less. We would have in essence drafted a RT #1 and would more than likely not re-franchise BA next year meaning he walks and Miami could make a play for him then if Johnson does not work out.

The value at the top of the draft does not justify giving up a kings ransom to move up as much as some on here hope or wish it does. That and the fact that we are desperate to trade out of 1.1 lessens our bargaining power greatly.
This makes sense to me too. Furthermore, since there are 3 LTs that Miami might be satisfied with in the draft, they can afford to wait until KC either makes it's pick at 1.1 or trades it to someone else before they start to feel desperate and even if the 1.1 is used on a LT (by either KC or another team), they can still try to trade for BA or trade with Jax, Oak, Phili, etc. to move up and get one of the other two LTs.

I imagine if there is a trade it will likely happen on the 2nd day. Dolphins will see how everything settles after the first day.

Right but the X factor is that Detroit and Arizona are in the market, too.

Someone is going to get left out.

Yes, someone is going to get left out no matter when or if a trade happens. I'm not sure that changes anything I said.

not really, it's sounding like 3 out of the top 5 picks are going to be OT's

Miami might not have time to wait
