Hope John Dorsey goes after Desmond Bishop

Packers preparing to release Desmond Bishop
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on June 11, 2013, 10:54 PM EDT
Desmond Bishop AP

Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop racked up 218 tackles and eight sacks in two years as a starter for Green Bay. Now the Packers and Bishop could be going their separate ways.

According to Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com, the Packers intend to release Bishop if they can’t restructure his contract or work out a trade.

Bishop has been with the Packers since 2007 and earned a starting job with the team in 2010. He started 25 games over two seasons and posted a career high 115 tackles in 2011. A hamstring injury last preseason forced him to miss all of last year and Bishop has yet to be able to take part in any of the Packers offseason workouts. He was held out of OTAs and the team’s mandatory mini-camp last week.

Bishop said he is close to 100-percent and was looking to get back on the field soon. That field may no longer reside in Wisconsin.

It appears unlikely that Bishop would accept a contract restructure. Bishop came out and said he had his sights on being the league’s defensive player of the year. Someone with that belief in their ability isn’t going to accept a contract restructure just because of an injury. It addition to reports the Packers were seeking to trade Bishop before the draft, it appears a parting of ways may have been inevitable.

A LOT of free agent dough was spent this offseason. I don't think we need any more. It's not like we're acquiring Peyton Manning or anything like that, as good as Bishop is.
This.

Albert might be getting a big contract extention and I really want us to be proactive and give Justin Houston the long term deal he deserves next spring.

Hali's cap figure drops by $4 million next season and his base salary drops by $6 million. We can easily fit Houston's extension into that slot with the expectation of having it fully incorporate Hali's salary by 2016, when Hali will almost certainly be let go.

Though I do think the concerns over his hamstring are justified. I didn't realize he ruptured the thing; many guys don't ever come all the way back from that.

I still think you need to look into him. This pass rush is going to have to come from everywhere and he was starting to look like a very dangerous interior rusher in 2011. If he can get back to that and you can add a credible threat as an interior rusher, let alone the 5-7 sacks he could bring, teams have to gameplan against the OLBs completely differently than they would with someone like Nico or Akeem out there.

If he doesn't get the offers he's looking for, I could see Dorsey inviting him on a 1 yr prove it deal. Yea it pushes Akeem to the side, but WGAF? Would put Nico on an internship for his rookie year, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

From bishops pov, he can prove he's healthy, and still young enough for big payday elsewhere next off season.

It's the only way I see this going down for KC.

This x 1 brazillian.

We don't need any GB castoffs. We should be growing our own young talent. Adding Bishop would do nothing but take valuable reps away from Nico, who I think is absolutely perfect in our system.

I like Nico but he hasn't done jack shit. I'll take the known product in Bishop and see if Nico can beat him out.

****ing n00bs.

Referring to a player coming off IR and still can't practice as a "known product".

I'd like to clarify...

I think Nico Johnson develops quickly into an average (maybe a hair below) NFL starter...not a big difference maker or anything. Just solid...but he can probably get to the level of Bishop.

He is also young and very cheap.

Throw Akeem Jordan into the mix and there really isn't a need for another ILB...especially one that still can't even practice and will probably want to get paid a significant amount.

He's been in the league six years and has had one injury. We know what he can do when healthy. We don't know what Nico will do.

So two guys with basically no starting experience who have proven nothing are better? You are one those "on paper" guys aren't you? Also, Bishop isn't going to demand Patrick Willis or even DJ type money for ****'s sake.

Hootie was right about you. From now on, I will call you #91.
