My garbage disposal died...

It was an Emerson that I installed in the mid 90s. I got more than I expected out of it. Emerson no longer sells garbage disposals with the Emerson name as far as I can tell. They are all Insinkerators (sp?) now. They're proud of those, for sure.

So, I bought a Waste King. It's all stainless steel where it matters and has a 5-year warranty (compared to Insink... that has a 2-year warranty). The warranty is a new replacement if it fails.

Anyone have a history with Waste King disposals?

I installed the new Waste King today. What a difference. Much quieter and rips through anything it sees.

Mine is the three bolt mount and is much easier to install than the old Emerson three bolt system.

I didn't see this until now. How is it inferior if it runs well and is quiet? And what is a "grand-daddy" disposal? The expensive batch unit? And how do you tell if a garbage disposal does a good job? Put shit in, it's grinds shit up and goes down the drain.

ISE is industry standard. That typically means that it performs better than the rest in the long run. You may have good luck with an off brand like waste king, but the pros like to stick with what works best

Does "performance" mean it does a better job, or it lasts longer? I'm not here to argue since I'm a DIYer, but Waste King's warranty is far better than any competitor.

Just curious.

It means they last longer, are built better and are more cost effective. When you install them for a living, you want a product that performs trouble free so you wont have to service them or worse, replace defective ones for free.

As a comparison, I have installed thousands if ISE disposals in 22 years of plumbing, but less than 200 of any other brand.

Like I said, you may have very good luck with what you have, but it's not what most pros would recommend.

I put in an Insinkerator almost two years ago. The warranty is 6, including in home service. Waste King is better than that? Mind you the one I bought was around $200, which I realize isn't cheap.

This is a 1/2 hp Waste King with a 5-year in-home warranty. Free repair/replacement in my home. It was $73, so not much of an investment.

Edit: I bought the unit from Sam's Club. Maybe Sam's gives better warranties, I don't know. The higher priced units from Waste King have lifetime warranties.

I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

I mainly went with the one I did because the plumber put in an Insinkerator when I built the house 17 years ago. I upgraded the sink/faucet a couple years ago and replaced the disposal even though it was working fine since I had the whole thing tore apart.

I'm not saying Waste King is garbage. I have one in my house. But if WK is $73 and Insinkerator is $80, I'm buying Insinkerator every single time. I've seen them run 30 years. They very rarely fail for any other reason than they're just worn out after 20 years or so.

30 years longevity? Hmmm... but they wear out at 20? The comparable Insinkerator is way more than $80 and only has a two year warranty.

What WK did you buy and install? If it was $300 you had to buy a 1hp batch unit.

I'm a DIYer. I would imagine to remove an old disposal and install something new it would be $400+... maybe more. That's why I'm a DIYer.

Dude just go down to Sears and get one. I did that 20 years ago and the thing is still working. Install it yourself, it is easy to do. Make sure you have it unplugged and there is no power to it before you work on it.

We get like $100 on them if it's just the install. Anything that has water has intense liability.

I'm saying I expect them to last 15-20 years. But I have seen them go for 30 years if the homeowner's story that it was original to the house is true. Yes, I have the 1 HP, most expensive model they sell. Been running it a couple years. It's not bad but I'm glad I didn't give MSRP for it.
