One playoff run.

And really only respectable for 1.5 years...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

****ing weak though not quite as weak as you claiming that Geno Smith is "unknown" after the homoerotic posts you've displayed for the ten months.

I think Geno will be a good NFL QB, but compared to players who have played (poorly) in the NFL, he is certainly an unknown commodity.

You acting like everyone who passed on Geno this offseason has a crystal ball with regard to his future is hilarious.

They are not. They are you looking at a website that ranks players according to their own analysis. What's wrong with that, you ask?

I will tell you.

Player X is a 5'9, 190 lb cornerback who was playing in a cover-2 zone scheme where he relied on safety help over the top. His particular coaches always kept him on the right side of the field. Other teams would line up their largest receivers on him to create a height mismatch. Meanwhile, it was recognized on film that the safety assigned with helping him would bite at least one step on play-action. Not enough to take him completely out of the play, but enough to get him a step out of position. Player X is a good player. He is coachable. He didn't press the receiver, because his coaches don't believe in gambling. They wanted him to contain the big play so as not to put pressure on his game manager QB.

Player Y is 6'1, 210 pounds, and he is not coachable. He doesn't listen to his DC who tells him they'd rather give up an 8 yard gain and live to fight another day than get beat over the top. His safety is extremely smart and extremely disciplined. His safety is constantly diagnosing plays and calling them out before they even happen. This gives Player Y the confidence to jump routes, which he does often. He knows that he will either get the interception or his safety will be behind him for the help, which he almost always is. For this reason, they are statistically the most effective secondary duo in the league. When Player Y gets beat bad, it rarely shows up, because his safety help is there to prevent a big gain.

Now, Player X and Player Y are both unrestricted free agents. You log onto your good ol' PFF where they have Player X as giving up 8.9 YPC and Player Y giving up 6.7.

You want Player Y. You say he's better. The evidence clearly proves it.

Except... it doesn't.

The PFF guys look at that and they determine Player X is playing off the receiver and doesn't have the closing speed to defend the pass. Fine, but that's what he was told to do. And the PFF guys don't tell you they made this judgment call. You aren't privy to that individual, play-by-play analysis.

In fact, there IS no individual, play-by-play analysis. Because guess what? In order to do that, you need a crew of guys working almost around the clock for every single team.

You know what that's called? Position coaches.

Five guys on a website do not analyze 64 starting cornerbacks with the insight and accuracy that 64 guys (call it two coaches per team) will.

And the fact is, when dealing with free agents, you cannot compare them to the entire league. You have to compare them to only the OTHER AVAILABLE PLAYERS. (this argument is a little moving-the-goalposts, but I still think it's worth mentioning).

This is why I don't just blindly look at statistical analysis from a fan-run website and call it gospel.
So...you just admitted to ignoring the facts./clayhole

True that my man, thats why I said it all comes down to coaching as well. another facet that helps make the QB.

U may have missed it, and i mean that in a cool way, not hot headed.

Some look at him without competant coaching, then the first offensive Qb HC in JH.

Since then, the one playoff run, and respectable since JH arrived.

But u see, thats why i said some can look at before so called competant coaching, and some after.

In fairness you have to believe 10 games into last season he was taking them to the playoffs, that was a lock.

And really who knows what happens if he is the QB the whole season into the playoffs? (minus the 1 game due to injury) He took that same team to the brink of a SB so he could have done it again or made it to the SB.

Anyone who says they KNOW he couldn't have is being disingenuous.

The only thing I know is that defense started allowing a lot of pts as the season went on and in the playoffs.

I don't think that Smith led offense would have scored enough to win/come back in some of those games...

I'd love to see a breakdown of Kaep's time of possession compared to Smiths. I have a theory that it might have attributed to some of the issues they had later in the season as opposed to earlier, but that won't hold water if they are similar.

actually, he was benched and traded

it's funny how we can't talk about it...he's this amazing, clutch, non-injury prone QB who...for no reason anyone could guess, was targeted to be replaced by his new coach

Harbaugh took one look at Smith and knew he had to draft his own QB, and he did, then he slapped a leash on Smith, then benched him, and then traded him...oh yeah, and then went to the Superbowl

repeat: Alex Smith, not good enough for the best young coach in the league

prior to Harbaugh slapping a leash on him, he had 5 years of proving nothing...in the last 5 years he has played more than 11 games exactly ONCE

but listening to you guys, damn, he's this swashbuckling, strong armed, injury free god who carried the 49ers to the Super...err, to the bench

and according to our resident Smith stalker, he has a golden rod and children with large vulvas and shining morals...not that he cares or anything (to the tune of 100 posts per day about alex smith)

so, carry on with the Chiefs Tiger Beat Coverage of our dreamy new stud fresh off a California bench

i've been saying for quite a while that ASmith was one of the most valuable players on the 49ers defense. He kept them off the field. Our defense will improve by leaps and bounds this year because of what ASmith brings to the TEAM, and yet people will bitch and moan on here saying our defense bailed him out....
