Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

How about Alex Smith or Brandon Flowers?

Colin Kaepernick?

Drew Brees?

Andy Dalton?

Or, should we go with GBs second round picks?

Nick Perry (taken at 28, close enough to 34)...Randall Cobb?...Clay Matthews was 26...Jordy Nelson was 36th...Greg Jennings?...Nick Collins?

That goes both ways.

No, it doesn't.

The Chiefs have a shitty history when it comes to second round draft choices (hell, they have a shitty history of solid drafts, PERIOD).

If my team needs a starting QB and I feel that QB A. is worth the draft choice, I do it, with no regrets.

And for the record, the Chiefs could have selected Kaepernick in the first round back in 2011 but chose not to do so. They had three chances to select Russell Wilson but chose not to do so. They could have taken Brees but instead traded for Trent Green.

So regardless of giving up a second choice 2013, the Chiefs have just made bad decisions for decades.

you could pick a stud almost every year out of the 2nd-5th rounds and be like "omg what about that guy" but more times than not...these picks never amount to much.

the best value from 2nd-7th round picks is the lottery aspect of finding that Jared Allen AND being able to control these guys for 4 years to fill your roster spots 30-52 at a fraction of what a veteran costs.

go look at the exact pick #34 the last 10 years and tell me the success rate of that EXACT pick

The same guys that though Cassel was "neat-o" two years ago seem to think this is a great trade. The biggest criteria for them seems to be if it is just better than last year.

If there were more smart fans that casual fans of the Chiefs, Chiefsplanet would have 100,000 members, not 11,000 members.

For this trade to be a success, a few things MUST happen.

1) NONE of the QBs from this class can be better than Alex Smith. NONE OF THEM. We hold the top pick, that means we have chosen to pass on all of them because we view Alex Smith as superior.

2) Alex Smith needs to be the guy Reid and Dorsey view him as...a guy that can turn things around in KC and get us into the big picture of the NFL. If h starts for 2 years and we don't win at least 1 playoff game in that stretch, it's a failed trade.

This is what drives me batshit crazy.

Could we have won a superbowl with Trent Green? We certainly could have. He, and the rest of the offense, played well enough to win. You don't get much better than the number one offense.

Why didn't we? Did it have anything to do with how we picked up Green or his draft status? Same goes for Gannon, who got them there, but suddenly his draft status stopped them from winning?

There are good quarterbacks, and I don't give a shit how we get one, we just need to get one.

Carl Peterson and Scott Pioli are not walking through that door.

Look at what JOHN DORSEY has done with similar picks over the last few years.
