It's crazy how tough those old guys are. I think growing up with 500 different fruit flavors of medicines to cure every ailment has sissified the last couple of generations.
My grandpa on my mom's side ran a cattle farm with around 100 head until he turned 80. We would spend the summer on his farm and the last couple of years he would have to stop several times a day because he was "having a spell". Turns the "spells" he was working through were angina heart attacks. My other grandpa is 78, and found out that a winter hail storm destroyed his roof, and his insurance adjuster gave him $4500 to pay somebody to come in and tear off two layers and out on one. He decided to pocket some of the money and tear off the shingles himself. After he got them off he didn't feel too bad so he decided to put the new roof on himself also. He has 2 sons and 6 grandsons who would have happily helped if you would have asked, but he didn't and replaced the roof himself. |

my great-uncle is 78 years old and lives in my guest house. no matter how hard i try, i can't get him to take it easy and rest a day. cuts the lawn, cuts brush in the woods, paints everything in sight. his ambition puts me to shame.

He tough but not as tough as my grandpa. Ok he got a lung removed had cancer and they told him he would die in five years he lived 20 years after that. You can't kill an Essex that easy.

Glad to hear he's going to be okay.
That generation produced some tough men. Even in advanced old age they will not go quietly into the good night.

Sounds like my grandpa.
He died last year due to complications from Alzheimers. He forgot how to do just about everything. He became a completely different person. All of my life he was sort of a grumpy old curmudgeon. He became a teddy bear who loved to tell stories and talk to people. Anyway, he was in the hospital, hooked up to machines. His quality of life was not great any longer. The decision was made by grandma and aunts and uncles to let him go. The unhooked the nutrition source. They expected him to live only a few days. About a week later he was still going. He deteriorated to the point that they thought if they removed all support he would slip away. They did. He didn't. This is an 82 year old man we're talking about. My grandparents never (visually or through stories from ALL relatives, EVER really got along). So it was a shock to me that he was holding on for her. My grandmother had to go to him and tell him that she would be ok. That she'd be taken care of and he could let go. He was holding on to take care of his. Later that day he passed away. It'll be a year on St Patrick's Day.

You do have a tough grandpa, Brad. Mine was too. I'll post a thread about him in a little while.

My grandpa was eaten by a bear, but he clawed his way out of its stomach, and then stitched it closed and nursed it back to health. They're inseparable now.

The last time my grandpa drank too much, he took a gigantic piss from his dick, which he had named "Colorado." What you learn in books as the Grand Canyon being formed by the Colorado River is true, although they should probably be a bit more clear and say "Grandpa SNR's stream"

Go figure. His advice to me in 7th grade was "They don't grow babies in their azz..." I know, with tact like that it's hard to imagine we're realted. Mom's side, the man has never taken anything stronger than a ****ing tylenol. Might be why the IV pain killers messed him up. Anyway, he's getting better. The man is George Burns.

BTW, the 5 million dollar grandpa has had his lungs drained again yet still doing well. Being down so long has had its complications but he should be out and home in days.
He's the Muhammad Ali of old age...
