**Official USA vs Germany World Cup Match Thread**

USA vs Germany | Recife | Group G | 11 CT | ESPN

This is the big one.

If the United States ties or wins they advance to the knock out stage of the World Cup. There are also scenarios that are not that outlandish that let them move on if they lose but **** those scenarios.

The conversation was about losing and advancing until you made it about tying.

You want to talk about sorts that don't make sense? Try baseball. Why does it take so many games to decide who's good enough to enter the playoffs? Why do teams need to play the times in a row? There's a reason it's dying.

Maybe if you didn't start out saying you didn't understand something, then when it's explained to you move the goal posts suggesting you understand it, but just like complaining about it anyway.

Absolutely.

I would love a very short season for baseball. It's hard to give a shit when there is 162 chances to watch.

Basketball has to many regular season games, too. I am a less is more kind of guy.

I'm okay with the draw/tie system in soccer because that's the way its always been. The system used by the rest of the world.

You can call them reeruned but its the classic feeling that soccer has been trying to overcome in American since Pele. Thats why it would have been so important to not let that late goal happen against Portugal. The USMNT would have "won" their way into the next round. Big difference.
First, your first point is bogus. Plenty of teams start of hot, then lose 4 of their last 6, (and not b/c of resting players) only to advance on tie breakers.

And again, 7-9, 8-8 get you to the dance.

They did win their way in. They won 3 points in their first game, and a forth in their second game. They earned those points.

Quote one complaint about the sport, and I will leave CP for a month.

That is entirely my boredom with MLB, NBA, NHL. It's just a bunch of scrimmages until a handful of rich teams get 'super cereal' in the fall.

Not in direct word for word quotes, but 'hard to grasp' is, by any fair measure, fungible with 'difficult to understand.' And countering the fact that the NFL allows for ties that it hardly ever happens can fairly be construed as a complaint about the prevalence of ties in soccer.

The group stage isn't designed to eliminate one team with every game. It's designed to trim 32 down to 16 by advancing the 16 teams that perform the best over a 3 game span. The three game span is played in groups which are seeded and balanced to try to give the most measured answer to the question of who the best 16 teams are.

This is the opposite of the NCAA tournament, where everyone gets in and flukes abound. that tournament is designed to be "exciting" and unpredictable, this one is designed to settle the question of who is truly the best.
