Problems with Superman Ultimate edition DVD...

Just an FYI, in case anyone bought the big 14-disk edition...

Okay, folks. Here's Warner's official statement on the Superman discs:

"Bonus content was omitted from the Superman III Deluxe Edition in the 14-disc Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition. Furthermore, disc one of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition did not include the Dolby Digital 2.0 mix. Neither disc is known to be physically defective in any way.

Warner Home Video wants to extend apologies to all of our loyal Superman fans who've waited so patiently for these great collections and has taken immediate steps to correct these errors with the intention of standing behind our product 100%.

Replacement discs can be obtained by calling: 800-553-6937. The exchange program applies only to purchases of the Superman III Deluxe Edition in the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition and to disc one of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition, available as a single title, as well as in The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection and in the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition."

Just so you know, we're trying to find out if and when future corrected sets might arrive in stores, and if this replacement program will work for international customers (who may have purchased the R1 sets via Amazon) as well. We'll let you know when we hear anything on these issues.

Stay tuned...

SPOILER: Highlight the text if you want to see it...

Superman turns back time again... I didn't like it. With the big emphasis made about why Superman shouldn't do it in the first one and what a mistake it would be, why would he do it AGAIN? I understand the reason they did it is because Tom Mankiewicz thought that Clark Kent should never kiss Lois Lane, that only Superman should ever kiss her, and that's why they went with that ending (they scripted both, and Lester used the magic kiss)...
In reference to the spoiler, the ending of the Superman: The Movie was supposed to be the ending of II all along. The question really is this, how was the original movie really supposed to end.

What did you guys think of the Donner cut of Superman II? I was disappointed. I had been led to believe it was virtually an entirely different film. It wasn't. A few scenes here and there, and an ending that didn't make sense. The Marlon Brando scenes were nice, but other than that....

Donner said on one of the commentaries in the box set... that the original ending of the first movie was supposed to be a cliffhanger. But somehow when they were going through the footage, I believe it was the studio... somebody wanted them to use their most impressive stuff to end that first movie, and that was turning back time. That's probably the only thing that's bad about the Donner Cut, otherwise I love the Brando scenes in the movie, well worth seeing.

And I got the replacement disks, I'm not sure that they made a huge difference, but I'm not going to spend hours watching the special features to Superman III. Plus I guess the audio mix on the first movie wasn't the true theatrical mix... I got them just so I have the "official" set, and it was free, so it wasn't like it cost me anything.

Is this the same remix that was done for the 2001 release? I actually own that one. I like how they remixed the sound and made it louder, but i know alot of purists were upset....

I havent seen the Donner Cut yet...

I really enjoyed it, but I will say I went in expecting it to be total crap. I like Donner, but I knew they had to do a lot of work to try and restore and piece this together, and I expected it to really be ugly and disjointed. But it moved along pretty well, and the Brando scenes were great, that was supposed to be the key to the whole movie.

No, the 1st disk is supposed to be the true 1978 theatrical audio mix... the 2nd disk is that 2001 version of the movie. But when they originally released the box set, they had the 1978 theatrical cut but not the right audio mix, apparently.

Perhaps I just expected the magic I experienced seeing it as a kid. I dunno. I thought Donner's ending didn't make sense. Why did he need to get revenge on the diner guy if that never happened?

I know, a lot of people didn't like that... but that's a classic movie moment, I would've been disappointed if they left that out. Plus, they never truly establish a previous history... it could just be Clark going in to teach that guy a lesson, because they establish he's always causing problems. A bit of a stretch, maybe, but that's a great scene.
