Updated: My dad just told me he has prostate cancer.

A rather odd short and to the point conversation. He told me had some bad news. He has a fast spreading form of prostate cancer. They are scheduling a bone scan and a couple of other tests to see how far it has spread. He said Dr said if it hasn't spread we can slow it down with radiation. If it has spread there will is little chance to stop it or slow it down.
My dad was rather matter of fact, almost happy sounding and was quick to get off the phone citing that he needed to call my sisters and the rest of the family.
The oddest conversation I have ever had in 44 years.

90% is an excellent outlook! Will say a prayer that that's where the cancer stops. Best wishes to you and the family.

It seems it's not for every cancer, but they've had pretty good success with prostate cancer. It wouldn't work for my dad, sadly, but this is good information.

Yeah, pretty nuts right? It gets blackballed in this country for reasons I will never know for sure, but my hunch is that it has to do with the fact that it cures it in a one shot deal without any longterm revenue associated with it in the form of visits and drugs etc etc.

I have honestly never had the opinion that health insurance companies EVER take a stance where they are jumping at the opportunity to pay out on a claim, but in my dads case they sent him a check within a week of being home from the operation, told him how much they appreciated his being aware of the other options out there, and to tell all his friends how great the experience was. LOL! When was the last time anyone ever had an insurance company tell their clients that right??? They mentioned to him how much cheaper it is to pay out on a one time claim like this as opposed to massive long term expenses and how much of a savings it was.

We honestly thought we were going to be stuck 100% with the cost when he went to Mexico to have it done. We were straight up shocked when a check showed up at his house. It's been 3 or 4 years since it happened now and my dad is still doing great!

Sorry to hear about your fathers situation though, it sounds pretty rough
