With the movie estimated to have taken in less than $5m this weekend, and the current domestic take estimated at $116.7m, it's going to have to work in order to recoup its production budget (reported $144m) with the domestic box office take. With the foreign take only at $62.8m, and a current total estimated box office take of $179.5m, I doubt Sony's happy with the performance.

That's like going out to eat and saying, I know it's cooked right and all, but I decided I just don't like it, I want a refund.

I eat out quite a bit. I can tell you that, on the rare occasions where I've said anything even remotely negative about the food, even if it's just that I didn't like it, I've almost always gotten some combination of the following:
  1. Offer to get something else, free of charge
  2. Offer to have the same thing re-done, again free of charge
  3. Offer for free drinks/apps/desserts
  4. Some, or all, of the meal made complimentary
  5. Card entitling me to a free meal in the future

One of the theater guys here is free to correct me, but my memory is that most movie theaters make very little money on the sale of the ticket and that the vast majority of the proceeds from the ticket go to the folks that made said movie.

Theaters, IIRC, make their money on concessions. So if you think the movie sucked and they give you a refund, it would seem to me that they're giving you back somebody else's money - so what do they care? And if it builds good will that has you coming back out to buy more concessions, it's a win for them.

And if it is Sony's money that they gave you back and it was given back because Sony made a bad product, well I guess that's the very nature of refunds, is it not? Make a better movie next time.

sure, that's great customer service, but I certainly wouldn't expect it or demand it if it's a matter of my taste. Again, this is an instance where there is nothing technically wrong, but just a matter of taste.

Surprisingly unterrible if you have it DVRd and can fast forward through the predictably cheesy montage moments. "Oh look at them sing at the bar...they're friends now!! Yea!!" or the cliche'd painfully awkward moment or two. Yes yes yes, we get it, Sandra Bullock is uptight. Move along now, folks...

If you zip through about 10-12 minutes of it, the rest of it's not actually that bad. It has a healthy dose of mocking braindead Massholes so that alone makes it worth watching. Her family is essentially a pack of Tammy Lynns from Ted.
I agree. The scenes with her family were great.

'Ghostbusters' Heading for $70M-Plus Loss, Sequel Unlikely

Confronted by tepid box office for the reboot, the studio will instead focus on animated spinoffs.

Immediately upon the opening of Ghostbusters in mid-July, top Sony executives boldly declared a sequel to Paul Feig's all-female reboot of Ivan Reitman's 1984 classic was a given. "While nothing has been officially announced yet, there's no doubt in my mind it will happen," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony.

That was the studio's last public mention of a sequel. As of Aug. 7, Ghostbusters had earned just under $180 million at the global box office, including $117 million domestic. The film still hasn't opened in a few markets, including France, Japan and Mexico, but box-office experts say it will have trouble getting to $225 million despite a hefty net production budget of $144 million plus a big marketing spend. The studio has said break-even would be $300 million.

Sony hardly is alone in suffering from audience rejection of sequels this summer. But film chief Tom Rothman and his team, along with partner Village Roadshow, had high hopes for launching a live-action Ghostbusters "universe." Now they are preparing for steep losses (think $70 million-plus) and an uncertain future for the franchise...

Ouch! $300 million to break even on a $144 million production? They can't really have spent more on marketing than the film, can they? What other costs are in that $156 million needed to break even beyond marketing?
