I have a question looking forward to next year.
A lot of my summer squash and zucchini plants ended up fraying and splitting at the base, with the result that parts, or all, of some of the plants have been dying. How can I avoid that in the future? Do I need to put them all in planters until they are all large and have grown upwards for a foot and a half (I did that with my two most successful plants) or is there some other way to do it? |

Sounds like cutwork. Did you spray malithion? Or companion plant?

Oak leaf mulch next year. Cardboard collars or match sticks against the base of plants. Cut worms hate oak mulch.

I didn't see any bugs at all this year, so I didn't spray any pesticide at all, and the yield had been great without it until the splitting began. I'll try something like the collars next year, though, and I'll go with the oak mulch too, so thanks very much for those suggestions.

I've got a right fine crop of tomato worms.
I feed them to my eager chickens, and then I laugh at the worms when I eat the chickens egg. Cycle of life. The worms will have their day with my body, but my soul won't be there. My next body will be impervious to worms, heh. |

Wife's tomatoes are every bit of 5'6" tall and just as wide, but don't produce a hell of a lot of tomatoes. There are a few, but not nearly as many as the infrastructure would suggest.
I shook the hell out of them a few weeks ago, didn't help much. Is it just the goddamned heat (who's ready for fall BTW?) What did I do wrong? |
