Adrian Peterson Indicted

Reckless/negligent injury to a child. Indicted.

This league may not be able to sustain too many more of these black eyes. It's a mess.

I think the abuse of a 4 year-old is far worse.

It will probably **** him up in some way, he can't just leave his parent, and he can't defend himself.

A woman has the power to leave.

I saw the second report. He beat another kid in the backseat of a car so badly he left a scar on the forehead. Then he lied about it to the mother in text messages. There are pics of the injury too.

First of all, since you extended it earlier, I do appreciate the back-and-forth we've been having in this thread. We're disagreeing with each other and having a pretty interesting dialogue, which is awesome. I consider you in the highest class of CP posters. No homo.

The reason why the "everything is a big deal to a three year old" post is a strawman is because it's equating the frustration of "No, you may not have a cookie" with the emotional pain of having an individual 5 times his or her size use an implement on them.

It's clear you don't buy my "ritualizing" argument for the implement discipline, so I'll focus on this instead: when used responsibly, without any trace of anger, and with force that I would say needs to be under the category of "firm" (these are children 4 years and younger we're talking about here), then it's no different than an open hand on the bottom. Sure. But that's the danger parents encounter every time. If they use it responsibly, it should be last resort, yes? So we take the example of a child in his terrible twos... getting into trouble is an every day thing, and at its worst it's an every minute thing. It's trying on a parent's patience. Perhaps they've told the child already multiple times. Reasoning isn't working. The child is screaming, continuing to push the issue. In that state, the parent might have the patience to do this discipline action the right way. Might. But among the 1 in 4 parents who use objects as corporal punishment, in those last resort stages when they deem this to be necessary, it's not always the case among some of them.

And that's my final point against using objects-- because it's risky. Again, we can't get in the minds of our children. We don't always know when that will become effective. It raises the risk that even though the parent is likely fully cognizant of not wanting to harm the child (a completely different situation from AP), when you're using objects, the RISK goes up by a significant amount.

I certiantly had years of shitty jobs.

To clarify, he has already worked as a plumbers assistant for a year. Crawled under houses, installed plumbing, dug ditches in the hot Florida sun. It allowed him to realize the value of education.

I know you and others don't know him. but I bet at least 150 posters on here have met him at our tailgates. He's turned out better than me at that point in my life. I don't take credit for that though. He is making way better decisions at 22 than I did at 28.

Yes.

I absolutely 100% , no qualms...Agree that it is a risk to hit your children...with or without an object.

Period.

The only caveat I might add, and one that I think you will see is consistent throughout my posts.....is that there are risks inherent with everything.

Our duties as parents are to survey the risks (vs reward) and then just do the best we can because NO PATH is risk free. Thats really all I am saying.

A parent that has done the due dilligence and chooses to either

1) use corporal punishment

or

2) not use corporal punishment

Has a different set of risks vs rewards......

Lastly, JUST because a parent chooses not to use a paddle....doesn't mean there is no risk of abuse, or losing the temper....so just because a person goes this route doesnt mean they dont have to be still very careful...

I totally totally agree that it is a risk. But you can easily go the other way (lack of discipline) as well..Its a realllly fine line and honestly if it was any other poster (than someone I regard as highly as you) I may not take the time to lay this argument out...but again, I knew you would be a fun/interesting person to debate on this....And I know its just my opinion....but anyone who can stay in bounds, not lose their temper and raise good kids , I am unwilling to call 'wrong' or 'bad parents' even if they used a spoon to scare their kid.

Oh, and i have a man crush on you ;-)

I think our goals are the same -- to not raise shitty people, to raise a good person.
