Thanks for the clue Tooge. There are many spots. It is puzzling at my old house about 5 miles away we raised the same plants no problem. They were out in the open and I worry that my fence puts off so much heat. But will look into this blossom end rot.

I'm planting berry bushes this year (blackberry, blueberry, raspberry). If anyone has some hints/tips, I'd love to hear them.

I thank God for a lot of things in life, and surely on that list is that I didn't plant thorny blackberries. Who needs THAT hassle? I'm going to jump into blueberries this year. Which kinds are you getting? There's only 3400 to choose from. Missouri puts out a good pdf bulletin on the different varieties. |

Raspberries, look for thornless varieties, much easier to deal with. Unfortunately there are no thornless blackberries.

I had the best garden of tomatoes one year. They grew in bunches, loved just going out and eating them off the vine. Havn't had it that good in a long time. Love fresh garden tomatoes.

Ordered the "Volcano in a Box" from Pepper Joe's. It includes Yellow Bhut Jolokia, Giant Bhut Jolokia, Bhut Jolokia, Golden Habanero, 7 Pot Pepper, Naga Morich, Trinidad Scorpion and Butch T Trinidad Scorpion. Butch T is the new Guinness Record Holder for hottest pepper on the planet. Got 10 seeds of each kind, hopefully they'll all germinate. Plan on starting them this weekend, although I usually start them April 1st since May 10 is our time to transplant but with this mild spring I'm gonna go ahead and get them going.

Tater planters......
My ancient vegetable garden book says to do this to the seed potatoes. "Cut them about 1 1/2 inches square, making sure that each has at least one good eye, and cut a week before planting to allow cut surfaces to heal slightly". Do you do this? |

We didn't chit ours, but I'm sure my frugal grandparents would shake their head at my wastefulness, much like they probably would upon seeing me never ever use a handkerchief, but a quarter box of Kleenex instead.
