Pokemon Go: Augmented Reality (AR) Game For Your Smart Phone

To Be The Very Best: Pokémon Enters Into Augmented Reality

Gabriel Rosenberg

Halfway through your walk to school, a wild Charmander appears. Just a few throws of a Pokéball, and it could be yours. Will you stop to catch it? Nintendo is betting you will. Not just that, they're betting that you've waited most of your life to see a Pokémon in the real world. Pokémon Go — the upcoming iOS and Android app from Nintendo, The Pokémon Co., and developer Niantic Labs — promises to let anyone with a smart phone "find" and train the diverse creatures of Pokémon all around them. For aspiring Trainers, it could be an entirely new way to interact with a now 20-year-old franchise. For these companies, though, Pokémon Go — which launches for free sometime in July — offers the biggest opportunity yet to bring augmented reality into the mainstream, a chance to prove not only that AR technology is ready for people, but that people are ready for AR.

I thought it was an interesting idea, AR rather than VR. I've seen lots of apps that kind of do this already-mostly playing with pictures to add makeup or special effects. I'm not fond of the Pokemon craze but a Google Maps type of integration and ( I assume) a way of monetizing the app by opening it up to sponsored locations sounds intriguing.

You should be getting 10,000 steps a day, and half the kids playing this game weren't getting those steps in until now.

Getting steps is good, but you're not effectively exercising until you get your heart rate up. Don't get me wrong. I like the game. It gets people outside and moving around. But it doesn't have the same effect on the body as what a program like NFL's Play 60 goal does.

Look play 60 is all well and good but they wanted too much too fast. You have to get the kids out there first and that is hard in and of itself. Plus this does so much more. It promotes time with family. Before you'd have a mom ask the son if he wanted to freaking eat lunch with her in their own house but he wants to eat in his room playing CoD instead. Now they are already out and hotspots are diners, sandwich shops, etc. and you eat with your kid. Trust me it does more than just exercise.

Pressing a button? Now I know you haven't played this game. You swipe as well.

What I've been saying to all the people claiming the game is gay, "If the game was about walking around finding strippers, and throwing ones at them, we'd be out playing right now."

I am not playing, but the hate I've heard for it is laughable. It represents a very exciting leap in AR games. Not to mention, why is it such a big deal if the people playing are enjoying it? It has absolutely no effect on you if you aren't playing.

Never owned a cell phone.

Don't care where this cell phone game tells you to go.

Hopefully, it's very congested traffic...

I've never argued any other aspect you mentioned other than the exercise. I agree with you otherwise. I wasn't dissing the game at all.

How the **** have we come to a point that we have to incentivize kids to go out and play?

The sad truth is that humans, by nature, are lazy. We are always looking for something to make anything easier.

Are you that surprised that kids would rather play with an object that is the result of someone else's imagination rather than their own?
