Still havent seen a single reason to give Alex an extension that is in the ballpark of the top QBs in the league, but w/e. I guess it's the hip thing to do these days.
HOLY ****! WE MADE THE PLAYOFFS! He surely deserves to be paid like Flacco after he won the SB!!!! |

People need to start bringing alternatives to the table when they say "Don't pay Alex". That's fine that you think that, but one question: who are you replacing him with?

Is Alex Smith the guy? If not, the final answer to your question is, who gives a rat's ass?

Are you suggesting that low level free agents and castoffs aren't good enough replacements?...

If they are offering a guarantee that is for 2-3 years worth, he absolutely should not sign. Go and earn a new contract. Chances are that contract is at least 2-3 years AFTER this year. Total money does not matter, guarantee and signing bonus matters. Too much and it hurts his team that could help him succeed and keep his job. Too little and he's too expendable. It doesn't matter if the Chiefs paid him a lot this year and next, it helps him little. He needs years 4-6 to be sufficient. |

I'm not gonna fault Dorsey for not going on a spending spree or drafting players to replace players that are gone next year. Some people don't understand that we literally couldn't do anything else. Well, unless you don't wanna pay our best players to stay here.

Alex did the same shit in SF.
He wanted more money than they wanted to give him and so they let him hit the market. He ended up signing back to SF for less than he and his agent thought he was worth. Either Alex or his agent have a history of overestimating his market value. I think his agent wants another cut like he got out of his rookie contract, and that's just not going to happen. If Alex hits the market after the season he's not going to get top flight QB money at 31 years old. The bigger problem is that KC has no plan B unless Bray or Murray turn it up and prove they have some long term value. I think Alex can only improve his value by having an incredible season... but he can do a LOT to lower his value. |

Reid has shown he can get adequate play out of the feeleys and company of the league, so if all Alex is gonna give you is adequate play, don't pay him. If Reid is the QB guru we've been lead to believe, why not let him roll with a much cheaper option and get similar play?
So to the question of "if no Alex, then who?" It doesn't really matter. |

The question is "Can Alex Smith get a team to the Super Bowl".
He walked off the field in New Orleans with the NFC Championship game more or less wrapped up, but I know that won't carry weight with people who probably also blame Smith for the Colts loss despite playing maybe his best game as a Chief. So the schools are: *Yes, Alex is good enough to get to the Super Bowl. *I'm not sure if he's good enough or not. *No, he's not good enough. If you're in the first camp you want to pay him. If you're in the second camp, it would be madness to send him away and start over. Surely the chances of him winning a Super Bowl are much greater than that of a random rookie draft pick. Of course, the third camp doesn't want to pay him because they think he's not the guy, but that is a pretty hard case to make. His numbers over the past 5 seasons are very consistent. I think the sensible answer is that we pay him for the next 2-3 years. Camps 1 and 2 would be happy, and by the end of that period, he'll be either at the age where he begins to decline or we'll know he is the guy. |

Sure he's good enough to win a SB. But paying him 18 million dollars per year is going to seriously effect that.
