That said, most student athletes do benefit from having structure (respective sport and school) in their lives, along with the degree. Whether they are actively engaged or not, they still have an opportunity to get an education and are learning more than they would if they didn't have the opportunity.
I'm certainly not going to prove anything and the only evidence that I have would be fifteen years of gradebooks to go along with APR and GPA reports. Even then, my evidence spans sports, with most of the students clearly understanding that they will not become professional athletes. However, that describes most of the student athletes in the US.

A couple of semesters ago, I had a couple of volleyball players in class. Out of 57 students, one of the girls was by far the top student in the class. The other girl was top five. Regarding football players, of the two that I've had most recently, one is currently in the NFL (with a degree in mathematics) and the other is in medical school.

I realize that there are student athletes that don't take college seriously. However, I would argue that they represent a distinct minority of student athletes.
