I didn't like the first one all that much, it seemed overlong and meandering and for much of the runtime pointless, but that doesn't keep me from looking forward to part 2.

Yeah, they definitely went over the top with the last one at times. That last scene with the trees dangling over the cliff was ridiculous. They should have at least greased one of them.

I like Jackson, but yes, he goes too far over the top of believability with his action scenes at times.

Actually, it's pretty likely Legolas would've been in Thranduil's throne room when he first met the dwarves, etc., though he's not named specifically or anything.

But his being a key character obviously is "out of place", but so what?

As for Azog -- There are orcs involved. They decided to take one and make him front and center, though according to canon he was already dead by this point. Meh, I can't really get fussed about it.

I don't really understand why some people disliked the first one. I liked it. And since it wasn't a self-contained story like the first installment of most trilogies, I think final judgment has to wait until the entire story is told.
