Setting up my son's iPod Touch

Ok, so a generous co-worker gave me his old, 2nd generation iPod Touch to give to my son for his 13th birthday.

My question is, how do I get the music that he already has under my wife's iTunes account over to his iPod? Do I set up a new user account? Ideas?

Amazon. I do the 320kbs and I'm very happy with that bit rate.

I'm not a fan of Apple's encoding. But then again, I'm slightly insane when it comes to audio.

I prefer Amazon because of the great sales but it seems like there is a lot of clipping on their mp3s. Itunes 256 seems to sound a little better to me. What sucks is I can't use mp3 gain with them to level out the sound on my player.

I thought only google did 320kbs. Amazon is still 256 last I checked.

I've never had any issues with digital clipping on iTunes. How is your iTunes set? Do you have the volume on full in the Options menu? If so, that might be it. Or it could be the computer speakers or recordings.

I just downloaded a file from my Amazon cloud and it's 320.

Is it an item you purchased directly from amazon or is it something that may have been uploaded from your PC? Everything I see on amazon still states 256kbs

As far as my clipping, it isn't on my PC. It is on all my mp3 devices. I hear clipping on amazon mp3s while I don't on itunes AAC. I can remedy it with MP3Gain but I don't like messing with my audio files if I don't need too.

Weird. I just checked the bit rate on mp3's I downloaded directly from Amazon and they say 320kbs. Strange.

Hmm. Maybe the Amazon mp3's are closer to the original recording. One thing I didn't like about the AAC's is that they filtered the original masters in a way that they didn't sound like the CD, yet the mp3's from Amazon sound just like the CD. Often times, it's the same price for the mp3 & CD as it is for the mp3 or CD alone, so I get both.

That could be the issue. The guy that invented iTunes lives about a half a mile from me and he's on my 3.5 dog mile walk (which I used to do 5 times a week for a decade and haven't done five times this year!). Next time I'm on his street, I'll ask him. Really nice guy.

Really odd. All my amazon mp3 purchases are 256.

I would prefer to go Amazon full time but their match feature really sucks. I don't have a large music library, only about 3500 songs or so, but itunes matched over 2500 of them while amazon only matched about 1000.

When you go to the "Details" tab, it says 256? Yeah, that is odd.

Do you have Amazon Prime and if not, does that make any difference?

I don't have prime but I don't think it would make any difference. Everything online states amazon is 256. Maybe they just know who you are and don't want to piss you off.

Seriously though, what a trip. All that said, I don't have any problems with Amazon's 256kbs files on my iPad, iPhone 4s or on a memory stick in my car.

I think it's either a setting for you or the headphones. Maybe the Amazon mp3's are too loud. As I had mentioned, I know for a fact that Apple "processes" their AAC files, which is why I won't buy them. They don't sound "right" to my ears in my room.

Well, I'm inclined to trust your ear over mine so I might give Amazon another shot and just see what I think since I have a new device to listen on now with this iPhone.

Of course, maybe there is something about that "processing" that appeals more to my ear. Who knows.

Could you explain more what it is they are doing on that?

They're filtering out the bottom end and filtering the top end over 10k. What that does is reduce the dynamics and make the file "louder", but it's less appealing to the ear when listening on anything other than earbuds and earphones.

So, when I hear them in my room, they sound all kinds of jacked up. It's like "Whoa, what just happened to the music?" kind of vibe.

But hey, if it works for you, go with it. Everyone hears things differently and if it's working, I'm certainly not one to say that you're "wrong".

Go to the computer that the wife's music is synced to. Where her iTunes music library is.

Thanks so much. I have no problem with the 100% legal thing, as I did buy the music for my son and just moving it to his device. Otherwise I wouldn't do it.

Here's my problem. I'm an idiot at things like this. Maybe because I'm on a Mac or I just am not doing it right, but the Sharepod thing doesn't seem to be coming up clean on my CPU. Do I open it? Save it? Sorry.

Sorry dude. I made an assumption that you were Windows. The file is a Windows .exe, which OS X can't use.

Try this: http://downloads.macroplant.com/Sharepod-4.0.2.0.dmg
