I read that Sony was willing to sell PS3 at a loss initially, but they aren't going to do that for long.

And, they say $500, but is that the whole shebang, or the stripped down version, ie, no hard drive or network or peripherals.?

I think you are overestimating the number of 25 year olds with HD setups.

I was checking out Blu Ray just the other day. Already goes from 23GB to 50GB. It's supposed to go up to 200GB of storage per disc within the next 12 to 18 months from what I recall. That's going to equate to much better games, games that kick the ass right off of anything we have now.

Consoles are traditionally sold at a loss, yes.

They have NEVER been sold at HALF their production cost. That's absurd.

It actually won't equate to anything right off the bat, let alone much better games than we have now.

Why?

Because developers don't take risks...they sell games.

PS2 is outselling X-BOX 360 right now. Sony won't have any problem keeping their hold on the gaming industry when PS3 comes out.

Link? 360 sold everything they put out with the first few waves. If you're talking percentage-wise, this is due to the huge price difference.

Mark my words, if MS comes out with Halo 3 before PS3 launches and it sells even close to Halo 2, PS3 is in huge doo doo.

"According to industry sources, more than 160,000 Xbox 360s were sold in February. That compares to more than 300,000 PlayStation 2's, more than 170,000 PlayStation Portables, and over 150,000 Nintendo DS units sold during the month of February."

Read the whole article, it talks about 360 inventory constraints in 2 places.

500/800 is 62.5%. Although it seems like I'm splitting hairs, 12.5% is a big deal in the business world.

The Nvidia chipset built into the original XBox was hellaciously advanced for its time.

Per Wiki:

(Regarding the Xbox and Development Costs and Losses)

Microsoft has invested billions of dollars into the Xbox internal documents and received back billions of dollars in sales. Overall though Xbox division has lost $4 billion from 2001 to 2005. [13] In particular, the Xbox hardware itself is a loss leader, since the console was sold at a loss even at its debut price. The losses deepened when sales of the Xbox increased and when the price was reduced successive times to compete with PlayStation 2 [14]. Microsoft predicted that it would not make a profit on the Xbox for at least three years. This prediction turned out to be correct; Microsoft Game Studios, Microsoft's game division in charge of Xbox development, had its first profitable quarter reported in January 2005, thanks largely to the success of Halo 2 [15]. Investor relations documents says that in the end of 2005 Microsoft lost more 1 billion dollars [16]. The Xbox project never gave an annual profit to Microsoft according to these documents. In return for the money loss though the Xbox gained name recognization and a dedicated fan base. [17]

Dell's/Moores law says that computing speed doubles roughly every 18 months. If Microsoft didn't make a profit on the XBox for 3 years, then that would mean that the console would have to have cost 200% of what it was sold for in order to them to not turn a profit for 3 years. So it has in fact happened before.

You're not thinking of all the possibilities. All the stuff that gets cut from console games due to lack of space (extra levels, characters, etc.) can be kept in. Right off the bat, compilations can be released that were impossible before. Game designers for PS3 are already taking advantage of the new media. It's going to kick ass.

There's a rumor going around that there will be no Halo 3. The only sensible thing I've heard out of it is that a game will be released that is pretty much a sequel but without the Halo name, using similar/the same characters and a new engine. It sounds goofy to me, though.

The number you are forgetting is 360 sold 100% of its units...

--------------------

People are forgetting that Sony's stock has been sinking lately, they hired an American ceo to run the company.. He has fired 10's of thousands of workers and shut down factories in the last year...

Thier production line has been reduced because of it...

-------------------

Sony will have no problem selling its units worldwide, But just like the PS2/xbox and 360 will have problems with inventory for the first six months... Anybody thinking Sony will not have problems because they say so is foolish... Sony is KNOWN to fib on facts...

Horrible rumor.. Mine is more realistic...

Halo 3 is already made.. It did not take four years to make halo2 after Halo.. They made both in conjuction, as in the reason why halo 2 was so short... All they have been doing now is using a beefed up version of the engine to rework the graphics.. And they keep pushing it back to match PS3 release date...
