http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/13/a...-overage-fees/
150 gigs for landline DSL, 250 for U-Verse. $10 for each additional 50. Thoughts? |

Is there a program to monitor your usage? I wonder how much online gaming for 20-30 hours a week uses.

I've always wondered how much bandwidth a 2 hour netflix movie takes.

150 GB per day sounds like a pretty decent limit, but with HD and with multiple family members all wanting to watch different Hulu or Netflix streams, and with content becoming ever larger, I bet it won't be long before the limit becomes a factor even if it isn't as crippling as the Hughes limits were.

So when it comes to 'how much bandwidth does this take' there's a pretty straight forward way to calculate the amount of bandwidth per hour.
So video tends to be encoded and references in MegaBits per second or KiloBits per second. For the sake of arguement I'm going to ignore the KiloBits/s video since most of the high quality video is in MegaBits/s. Now the bandwidth caps are in GigaBytes. A Byte is 8 Bits, so if video was say encoded at 8MegaBits/s second that would equal 1 MegaByte/s or for every second of video played you need 1 MegaByte of bandwidth. With 60 seconds per minute and 60 minutes per hour there are 3600 seconds per hour. 1hr of 8 MegaBit/s(1 MegaByte/s) video would need 3.6 GigaBytes of bandwidth. So the amount of bandwidth you need depends upon how high quality the video is. So the general rule for high quality SDTV is 3.5Mbits/s or ~1.5GB/hour of video. For broadcast quality 720p HDTV is between 8-15Mbits/s or 3.6GB-6.8GB/hour For bluray quality 1080p it's between 30-40Mbits/s or 13.5GB-18GB/hour Now over the internet they compress the hell out of some of the video and don't come close to approaching high quality(1080p video online is a real joke). The commonly used bandwidth metrics for internet video tends to be(or at least the last time I looked which was a while). ~1.5Mbits/s for SD or 675MB/hour ~3Mbits/s for 720p HD or 1.35 GB/hour ~5Mbits/s for 1080p HD or 2.25GB/hour If I recall the average household watches around 80-100 hours of TV a month. So at SD you'd have 54-67.5GB of monthly bandwidth. At '720p HD' you'd have 108-135GB per month At '1080p HD' you'd have 180-225GB per month Note this is with pretty medium quality video.

My concern is less with the immediate cap and more with the longterm scale. 250 gigs is plenty now, but in two years? I doubt ATT will be rushing to up the free cap.
In other words, it feels like an attempt to get a cap in without a lot of controversy (no one reaches these limits, etc.), knowing it won't take long for todays high use to become normal use. |

I ordered Uverse the 6mb line for 30 bucks a month for the first year. Comcast tried to offer me 6mb a month for 49 a year. I am right now 1.5mb at 46 a month? Lets not forget that Comcast also has the 250gb cap a month. I have never went over that cap and i download/stream alot of movies/tv/video gamesand yeah porn.
30 a month at 6mb line? or 1.5mb at 46 a month? what ****ing makes sense? comcast can eat a dick. |
