Hope John Dorsey goes after Desmond Bishop
Packers preparing to release Desmond Bishop
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on June 11, 2013, 10:54 PM EDT Desmond Bishop AP Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop racked up 218 tackles and eight sacks in two years as a starter for Green Bay. Now the Packers and Bishop could be going their separate ways. According to Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com, the Packers intend to release Bishop if they can’t restructure his contract or work out a trade. Bishop has been with the Packers since 2007 and earned a starting job with the team in 2010. He started 25 games over two seasons and posted a career high 115 tackles in 2011. A hamstring injury last preseason forced him to miss all of last year and Bishop has yet to be able to take part in any of the Packers offseason workouts. He was held out of OTAs and the team’s mandatory mini-camp last week. Bishop said he is close to 100-percent and was looking to get back on the field soon. That field may no longer reside in Wisconsin. It appears unlikely that Bishop would accept a contract restructure. Bishop came out and said he had his sights on being the league’s defensive player of the year. Someone with that belief in their ability isn’t going to accept a contract restructure just because of an injury. It addition to reports the Packers were seeking to trade Bishop before the draft, it appears a parting of ways may have been inevitable. |

I'm not a big fan of FA acquisitions but I think this would be a good pick up.
We sure could use this guy and he sounds hungry to be the best at his job. Would fit right in with DJ TA & JH.

It's not that we couldn't use an upgrade from Akeem, but not for the price he'd be asking.
The headache it would cause would outweigh the benefit of having that upgrade next to DJ in the middle |

Why make that more difficult on ourselves by overpaying for an ILB who already has gone through a season-ending injury once before? A LOT of free agent dough was spent this offseason. I don't think we need any more. It's not like we're acquiring Peyton Manning or anything like that, as good as Bishop is. |

Besides, what good young players? You're talking about two guys - Berry and Houston. I guess Charles expires around then, but man, you're talking about offering a 2nd contract to a RB...that's a notoriously poor gamble. I'd absolutely kick the tires. If he's thinking he's Julian Peterson I'd probably walk, but if we can get him for 3 years at market, I think he'd be an outstanding addition to a defense that's really starting to look pretty dangerous.

Albert might be getting a big contract extention and I really want us to be proactive and give Justin Houston the long term deal he deserves next spring.

Though I do think the concerns over his hamstring are justified. I didn't realize he ruptured the thing; many guys don't ever come all the way back from that. I still think you need to look into him. This pass rush is going to have to come from everywhere and he was starting to look like a very dangerous interior rusher in 2011. If he can get back to that and you can add a credible threat as an interior rusher, let alone the 5-7 sacks he could bring, teams have to gameplan against the OLBs completely differently than they would with someone like Nico or Akeem out there.

If Akeem can't hack it, I'd rather just give Nico the shot rather than sign Bishop.
