Sell Me On Relocating To Chicago From KC
My wife has a really good job opportunity in Chicago and is trying to talk me into relocating there. I would stay in my current position and work virtually with occasional commutes back to KC. Her office would be downtown, just north of the Loop. So, we'd like to be somewhat near there with public transportation options.
A new city with better food, music, and entertainment options excites me. However, I'm mostly on the fence about it due to the winters there and the thought of working everyday from home in virtually 8 months of winter bums me out a little. Any neighborhood suggestions from people who live/have lived there? Pros/Cons from people who live/have lived there? Is the weather that much different than KC? I love KC, but I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't getting a little bored here. |

Working from home during the winter months is pretty bleak and boring even in the KC area. It does definitely become a real slog.

I actually like going into the office. I feel like I don't fully appreciate my home if I'm there day in and day out. I enjoy the phenomenon of coming home from work. It would be a big change for me, but then again I could listen to death metal on 11 while I work, which would be a big plus. |

Freeze your ass off, all I can say. I've met many who thought it would be no big deal and they were back within 2 years. Usually in tears, emotionally shattered by that climate

This is another concern. While I am a bit bored with KC, I very much like our current residence and would hold a grudge if we were to sell our house only come back in a couple years.

Rent and owning price is very high compared to here. High taxes also, in the end I'd say you won't like it and will be wanting the quiet easy life of KC.

Stay out of the South side as much as you can and off Cicero would be my advise. The city is nicer on the north side of 90. Gets real nice up by Glenview and North Brook if you have the $$$ and don't mind commuting from the burbs. |

Is Hyde Park considered South side? Any thoughts on Oak Park or Ukraine Village?

South side is generally below 55, West is 55 to 90 and north is above 90. Oak Park is middle of the West side, don't recommend unless you want to be dead. Hyde Park is more upper class on the South side, close to the water. You'd probably be okay there. Ukraine Village is on the upper West side, you are close to Garfield area which isn't too bad. You'd be best off on the North side, but that's me. My uncle had an apartment off Addison about 4 blocks from boys town and it was a pretty damn clean area but rent was a bit high. |

BTW, Lincoln Park and Lake View are nicer areas that aren't really burbs yet and are close. Decent areas, close to Wrigley. |
