GREEN BAY, Wisconsin - The Green Bay Packers said good bye to one of their best defensive players Thursday, terminating the contract of two-time Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper.
The move comes one day before the Packers would have owed Sharper a $2.6 million roster bonus and saves them $3.4 million in salary cap space.According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, new general manager Ted Thompson had asked Sharper to take a substantial pay cut.A starter at free safety for the past six seasons, Sharper, 29, ranks fifth on the Packers' all-time interceptions list with 36. Last season, he joined Bobby Dillon (seven), Willie Wood (five) and LeRoy Butler (five) as the only players to lead the team in interceptions in at least five seasons.Sharper started 13 of 15 games in 2004, registering 77 tackles, with four interceptions, eight passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.Green Bay's second-round pick in the 1997 draft, Sharper suffered a sprained left posterior cruciate ligament against Dallas on October 24 but missed only one game.In another move, the Packers waived tight end Sparky Hamilton, who originally signed with Green Bay as a free agent on January 19.

I don't think the duplicate thread is that big a deal. The fact that the Packers' Sharpe retired almost a decade ago is kinda bothersome, though. Do you mean Sharper?

Of course, I'd abuse it. So it's probably good that I don't. You'd already be "ms repostsalot" if I was in charge. |

Phobia, what's your take on Hartwell after the Knight signing?

Maybe they're looking to fill that leadership void. I don't think Knight impacts Hartwell at all. I still think he's a Chief. |
