The last two 1st-rounders and why our defense will be much better...
I'm re-watching the Rams and Saints games today, and I have to say...our last 2 1st-rounders are gonna make a big difference this year.

Tamba Hali moved around alot against the Rams, leaving me wondering if he was only going to be effective in space. Well, the Saints game answered the question. He was very active and showed both the spin move and the bull rush. I was very impressed with the way he moved offensive linemen out of his way, especially when they had him at DT (they doubled him a couple of times and he fought through it), and I was also enthused by the way he chased the ball (he made a great tackle on Reggie Bush by scraping the line).

And DJ is just all over the field. You can really tell that he's getting comfortable with the scheme, because he's really firing to the ball.

While I thin our DT's are the week spot on the defense, I think they will hold their own. I also think they will benifit by having two young DE's who can get to the QB. Our DT's need to focus on clogging the middle and thats it. If they can do that, we are goign to have a solid D.

I'm not concerned about the run D at all, our LB's can more than make up for lousy DT's in that regard, but if they have to come up to the line to defend the run too much there will be big holes in the middle like we saw last week. The safeties are going to be our downfall if anything, at least until Pollard and Page get adjusted to the pro game and cover 2 and can take over completely from Wesley and Knight.

You've bought into the Gunther-ism just like everybody else.

Pittsburgh was the #1 rush defense (3.4ypc) and Sandy Eggo was #2 (3.5ypc). Both, according to your logic, were at a disadvantage because they only have THREE linemen, automatically meaning their front 7 is too small.

Tampa was 3rd (3.6ypc) and they weigh, left to right, 265/290/300/265.

The answer for those three teams is obvious - they overcome any perceived size disadvantage because they have good linebackers. In fact, take a look at the top 10 rush defenses and you'll find the same common thread. We have a very, very good LB unit with just Mitchell and Johnson.

I'm pretty positive, actually. I haven't bought into the Logical-ism at all. I'm just a little worried about the run defense, especially because that was the main good thing we did last year on defense. But I was serious. That stat on Tampa Bay is comforting.

We were definitely improved vs. the run last year. It can only get better when you remember that Eric "Misdirection" Hicks is on the sidelines...
