The right wing solution to this is teachers and students carry guns to defend themselves which does make sense.

Bulletproof vests?

I don't know if we can ever isolate the emotional deranged gun owner who just goes nuts.

If someone had returned fire, fewer people would have been hurt, I'm sure, Mr. Chiefmanwillgetyou. I just read a follow up report stating that the gunman reloaded at one point.

So nobody tried to tackle the shooter while reloading? Somebody should show them the video that they show to high school students on how to disarm a shooter.

Seven billion people on this planet. There's bound to be loonies with those numbers.

I agree with the armed society is a safe society argument. Imagine Marlboro_Chief with a gat

Damn, DeKalb is only about 25 miles from here. I know several people who have went to school there and a couple of people who live there.

I know the anti-gun crowd always go nuts over things like this, but I'll say the same thing I said after the VT killings and after every other damned killing where some shitbag coward with a gun knows he can get away with murder - one armed citizen could have taken him down before he ever got off a shot.

Agreed. Sometimes, you just have to fight fire with fire.

Some folks are trying to run legislation through the South Dakota legislature that will make it legal to carry firearms on college campuses.

It ran through the House (63 yes, 3 no), but a senate committee killed the bill.

Link.

I guess I'd like to add that my family is definitely sending good thoughts to the injured students and faculty at NIU.

This was pretty well planned. He had the element of surprise and the high ground. Apparently he just appeared out of nowhere on the classroom stage and the students were like sitting ducks. 5 are reported dead now.

The only way this guy could have been stopped would have been some kind of intervention before he took this action or a bullet to the brainpan. Either way works for me in this case.

I really wish that Universities would do away with their "gun free zones"...I'm not saying this would have made a difference in this case...or any other for this matter...but it could have

Shooting

Some lady, I think last summer or spring, developed a backpack that was bullet proof for her children to wear to school. I just can't believe what animals we have in this country. And then they turn around and shoot themselves so that they put an end to the story themselves. What kind of country is this becoming when a kid can't be safe going to a school? Scares the hell out of me.

I can't believe we are not being more aggressive towards the problem (lifting Concealed Weapons restrictions on college campuses, having armed police/security on public school grounds 10 hours a day M-F .....

I know the big hang-up with concealed handguns on college campuses is that most college students are 18-24 and therefore stereotyped into being immature and unable to handle a gun properly HOWEVER (at least in CO) you must pass a handgun safety course (NOT the hunters safety course) offered by the NRA, a law enforcement agency, or have been in the military or law enforcement....then there is the background check...none of the campus shootings have involved anyone with a concealed permit
