The NFL’s Newest Expansion Team: The Kansas City Chiefs

It’s not something that I ever thought I’d be excited to read, but this is exactly what this team needed. Not many times is a person, let alone, a sports franchise have the opportunity to start over.

When the Houston Texans came into the league the NFL gave them the first overall pick and extra picks in the middle of rounds 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7. They had 12 picks for their first draft, the Chiefs have 13. And while we don’t have the 1st pick in every round, we do have a similar set of draft picks as an expansion team did. In 1995 both the Panthers and Jags were just given 2 first round picks.

I also think we are better off than the Texans were. While they were allowed to pick some players from teams like Tony Boselli, we have better pieces to work with players like Tony Gonzalez, Damian McIntosh, Brian Waters, Larry, Johnson, Dwayne Bowe, Derrick Johnson, and our two young safeties. We also have some younger players who are also ascending.

While having so many picks takes a lot of pressure off of us, it is still critical that we land an elite player with the 5th spot. If we hit on the right guy with that pick we could see the Chiefs in the playoffs in a matter of a few years, if we miss it could take years to recover. Simply put we have to pray that we don’t end up with a Tim Couch or David Carr. We need to hit on our first pick like both Jacksonville and Carolina did in 1995 when the Jags took Boselli, and the Panthers took Kerry Collins. Both made the playoffs in 1996.

If Herm and Carl are looking for a team to model their rebuilding effort it should be Jacksonville. If we can accomplish that I’ll be pumped.

I hear ya, but the TEXANS were bad for a lot longer than need be because of their worthless GM and HC.

The draft will be our "Super Bowl" for the next few years.
Wonder if they'll be any good commercials?

Interesting perspective.

I definitely agree that we have a better starting point than an expansion team with our roster.

With 13 picks (7 of the 13 in the top 101 picks) we have an amazing opportunity to build this team.

Too bad we have a GM that sucks ass. Peterson is our version of Casserly-both are pretty inept. I guess we'll have to wait to get a real GM before we even consider snifffing the playoffs-how are those Texans doing? Exactly.

I like the idea of starting virtually from scratch. I don't like the idea of doing it with Carl at the helm. But given the realities of the situation -- we stink and Carl isn't going anywhere (thanks, Clark!) -- this is probably the best solution: Stockpile picks and hope they draft the right guys.

I just hope they don't look at all those picks and figure it gives them room to be cute and draft the next Kris Wilson or Junior Siavii. No projects, no reaches on the first day, please.

The difference between then and now is we were filling needs and wants then. We NEEDED a DT, Al Saunders WANTED a toy. Now every position is a need and we're looking to get the best players regardless of position.

... I hope.

I don't know why so many people think this has to be a several year rebuilding effort. Sure there are a lot of holes, but we are essentially getting the equivalent of 2 drafts this year. IMO, if we aren't competing for a playoff spot or better by next season, we're underperforming.

I feel the same way.

This is a huge opportunity for this team and I feel good about Herm drafting these guys, I just hope Carl is busy putting more fake tan on his face. Actually there is a good chance that CP will be stuck doing media all day. Herm needs to not do any till after our 2nd round pick in Rd 2.
