Lock being compared to Mahomes and Goff, a good sign he might be taken in the 1st round, and real credit to Lock's great coaches when he was growing up.

Lol

He knew nothing about playing QB when he got to Mizzou.

Hard to imagine he won’t be back. Would take a back-breaking loss to Vandy or Arkansas.

We’ll see how they do next year without Beckner and Lock.

Are you suggesting he was given a scholarship to play something other than QB, or that people who don't know a position are drafted to play that position?

And I’ll say, if he ends up 8-4 with losses to Georgia, Kentucky, Bama, and South Carolina, that’s something he can build on. Especially considering a few lucky breaks could have swung 2-3 of those.

Next year will be critical. They need to find a QB. Hopefully they do close the deal on Bryant - they have a good shot.

The defense is improving as Odom’s guys - Gillespie, Jacobs, Byers, Acy, and Holmes are all his guys - are taking on more responsibility.

I can see some glimmers of hope.

Honestly, the South Carolina game was a complete screw job by the refs. The Kentucky game saw some bad game management late in the game, but then another ref screw job. We should be 7-2 right now. My main gripe with Odom is recruiting. For his sake, I hope we get Kelly for a year.

'Lucky breaks'? You mean, absent a cavalcade of mind numbingly stupid errors?

The tigers SHOULD be 7-2 and could easily be 8-1 and in the playoff hunt. But Odom and Dooley coached this team directly into three losses.

This is the exact same rationalization we saw last season and im done with that shit. Fortunately it's not a real concern - he's going to be lucky to win 4 next year. Dude has an incredible amount of experienced talent on this team and still farted away any chance at a meaningful season. He's going to get steamrolled next season even with a shockingly favorable schedule.

Odom is overmatched.

We need a new coach but we have to be careful. Even once “hot” coaches like PJ Fleck are getting steamrolled. Fuente is 4-4 and lost to Old Dominion. Larry Fedora is 4-16 over the last 2 seasons at UNC, just like KU.

If we fire an 8-4 coach at Mizzou, we damn sure better hit a surefire HR.

Odom is overmatched.

Both those games should have been wins. Both featured bad coaching decisions. Both featured some extreme bad luck in bad calls that turned the game. Neither really had something bounce or break Missouri’s way. I’m not trying to excuse them and think he deserves critiques for them.

I’m just saying, that when I look at this how I think Sterk would/will, there’s some things that Odom can use to plead his case, for next year at least.

One thing he’s done a very nice job with - which is critical for a Mizzou football coach - is finding talent.

Badie, Acy, Holmes, Gillespie, Jacobs, Byers, Knox, Bledsoe, Kam Scott... none of those guys was heavily recruited. Odom’s staff ID’d them and has them playing above their recruiting ranking.

He simply HAS to win more of the key battles, but this is the other key side of the coin for a Mizzou coach.

Routinely bringing up the rear in recruiting in the SEC has to stop. That's a threshold problem and this team cannot be more than an afterthought if it doesn't.

It absolutely does. They need to win more key battles.

Time to cut bait on Andy Hill. He has been a disaster as the special teams coach and his recruiting has fallen off a cliff.

A coach at Missouri is always going to have to be capable of finding some under-the-radar talent and pairing that with highly recruited talent.

That first skill is hard to find and seems to be something Odom’s staff is showing.

The recruiting is trending up as well. The class rank isn’t good, and part of that is due to numbers. As they fill the class, it can/should get into the low-mid 30s.

Who ever had a hand in hiring Dooley should be fired the day after the season ends. He took a QB that might've bee a fringe top 10 pick and knocked him into day 3. What a horrible OC/QB coach.

Most recent mocks I’ve seen still have him in the first round, even around the fringe of the top 10.

Dooley hasn’t fixed Lock’s problems, but I don’t see that he’s made them worse, either.

Unless he is taken by a QB whisperer like Andy Reid, I'm not sure if his bad habits are going to be coached away ever. All it takes is for him to convince one NFL team otherwise, though.

Even if the Oregon kid stays in school, I don't see Lock as the top QB prospect. Too much other ridiculous talent at the top will get the needy teams waiting till Friday.

I agree. He needs to go somewhere he can sit for a year or two before becoming the guy.

His stock dropping a little bit but not a ton may work out better for him in the long run.

He’d be better off landing with a team picking in the 20+ range than a team that needs him to play right away.

I could see New England taking a look if he fails to a spot they’re comfortable with.

What are Lock's problems?

That's the thing that's so frustrating for me - I don't see a set group of problems with him. It's not like Gabbert where you just say "if someone could get him to stop staring at the rush..."

Instead it's just "man, if someone could get him to stop making 2 monumentally stupid errors/gm..." And those errors are often different types.

He needs to work on surveying the field and progressing through reads, but that's not a Lock issue as much as it's just a normal young quarterback issue. He also needs to work on his touch; if he can't just step into a throw and rope it, it's probably not gonna be a good one.

But at some point is that a fixable problem or just evidence that he's more Davis Webb than Matt Ryan? It makes you ask if maybe he just isn't the prospect we thought he might be (and maybe Hall is the horse in that offense, not Lock).

Yeah Lock has a bunch of limitations.

Doesn't have very good pocket presence and usually struggles under pressure. Always seems to struggle on 3rd downs vs good teams. Inconsistent accuracy especially in the intermediate range & doesn't seem to have great touch in that range either. Has always been a one read guy in our system and can lock onto his receivers and he can make some terrible decisions.

He has some great attributes obviously, but a bunch of weaknesses too which would scare me off from drafting him high.

I think the success of Barry Odom at Missouri is going to come down to landing a QB for next year. If he can get Kelly Bryant, I think they’ll have a very nice season vs a pretty soft schedule and it will give him the stability and security he needs to get it going.

He still blows my mind at times - the decision to go for 2 On the first drive of the 3rd quarter was particularly confusing - but he’s going to do enough to earn at least one more year and probably 2 unless they just absolutely crater next year.

I don't think they'll close the deal on Bryant unless all his SEC offers dry up and he just decides he wants to play in the SEC.

This staff hasn't shown me the chops to win a high profile recruiting fight for an out of state player, even a transfer kid.

There was nothing wrong with going for two there. If they kick the PAT, when they score later in the game, they go up 33-28, so they'd end up going for two in that spot anyway.

I disagree. Way to early to chase points. If they do the PAT early, it’s 21-20, then 28-20, then 28-27, then 34-28.

You should never attempt a 2-point conversion before the 4th, IMO, unless you’re down 24 and need 3 8-pt scores.

I updated the OP during the game with all the recruits. It's nice to see them adding numerous high-3, low-4 guys in the back seven. That's always been the weakness of the Mizzou defense.

Also, they've made progress, getting four guys from St. Louis, all of whom are mid-3 to low-4 star players.

Parker and Okwuegbunum would be a really dynamic duo if Albert O returns next year.

If they land Bryant, schedule sets up to do some damage.

Do we have a realistic shot?

I just wonder because his Sr year in HS he was such an amazing DE.

Yes, I think so. Lot of competition for him, but Mizzou has a legitimate chance. He likes Odom a lot and has raves about Dooley’s offense.

Auburn is the biggest threaT, IMO.

I think so, at this point. He’s a difference maker there and it’s probably his best NFL position.

Is there any concerns on MU fans on losing Lock? Is the back-up young and has potential?

It's big when a team loses a possible Day 1/Day 2 QB.

The roster is pretty trash at QB behind Lock right now. They need Bryant badly.

Connor Bazelac, the incoming freshman QB, is a good prospect but shouldn’t start Day 1.

They’re in some trouble next year if Bryant goes elsewhere.

There's not even a guy I'm comfortable with as a BACKUP behind Lock. If they dont get Bryant they're a potential 3 win team. With Bryant they could do 8-9 again because of an extremely favorable schedule. That's how awful the QB situation is, IMO.

The day my first child was born wasn't nearly as awe inspiring as the first time I saw a baseball game in high definition...

Heard it's probably not a great one. We should keep fingers crossed that we skullfuck the Hogs so hard that we pull him away.

Everything I've seen/heard has us no worse than 3rd. And Arkansas is losing ground fast. Morris is the only reason they have any shot at all and that appears to be fading.

I just don't have any faith in Odom closing the deal. He's been at the helm as our QB room has turned to shit; why should I expect some abrupt turnaround?

I've heard Arky are favorites, although it'd be hilarious if the dude went elsewhere where and declared it on Morris's birthday.

I'm not convinced Odom can close the deal either. What, he finally got his first 4 star verbal finally after 3 years?
