I picked this up as well, and I'm not very good. I'd recommend the Subspace Emmissary to learn the game. It makes you use all the various characters at certain points, plus the story is cool. Also, it's more of a traditional side-scrolling action game with familiar enemies from other video games. I'd recommend Meta Knight as an entry level character for solo brawls.

I usually play with Mr. Game and Watch. His final smash is the super octopus of death.

I finally figured out that the right joystick can be used for your directional-A attacks. So if you want to do an aerial-right-A, you can jump and press right on the right joystick.

Makes things a bit easier.
