I think I need to hire a lawyer for my 16 year old son who got a speeding ticket for going 34 in a 20 school zone.

It is a church school that he didn't realize was a school, and on the description on the ticket, the officer clocked him before he was even 10 feet into the school zone. And he was sitting there waiting for a high school kid, because high school had just let out. I have literally driven down this road over 50,000 times in my life, at all times of day and year, and have never seen cop checking speed in this school zone.

The cop could have seen how nervous my son was, and been understanding about his lack of knowledge of the school, but he wasn't.

So, I need to hire a lawyer, and thought I would ask here first.

If you are not a lawyer, maybe you could recommend someone.

I would recommend getting a lawyer then. Open up a phone book and find one that is local. I got a speeding ticket about 4 months ago in Lake Lotawana for going 62 in a 55 so I got a local lawyer and they took care of it.

Our solution was to start charging her for the minute overages in months that she went over and then in months following an overage month we'd take her phone from her and only let her have it on weekends and when she was out somewhere where we might need to reach her. After a few cycles, she finally bought into the limits and started making responsible decisions. The point is that we taught her about responsibility without enriching the phone company.

Makes sense to me.

In my case, my son works a part time job at a department store at the mall. It's not like he makes a ton of money. We were covering him on our insurance and probably will until he's at least 18. I have had heated discussions with the wife about this. I would prefer that he learn to pay all he can with his check. But she argues that he doesn't make much and that he should also feel that he is earning something with his paycheck and not just paying a bunch of bills with it. Of course, I think that wouldn't be a bad thing. It prepares you for the rest of your life.
