Ive been feeding 14% protien hog starter pellet. Doesnt seem to be gaining like i want. Problem is the hippy who gave me the hog said A) he picked out the runt. B) he picked out a female. C) he picked a hampshire crossed on god knows what.

He also thought he was gonna keep the hog int he middle of spfld. next to a goon friend of mine

So my questions are.
Should i just cut my loses butcher the piglet now and purchase a replacement to fatten up till winter?
Or switch feed?
(people at the feed store have ZERO clue)

Butcher the rear leg and leave the rest. The kids will still have a pet, with a new name like Gimpy, you'll get some nice meat for the freezer, and the hog will gain more weight because it has less surface area to distribute the calories. A win for all.

I found my pig, "bacon" the first afternoon I was moving back home....That pig ate enough to feed out 3 pigs and I still butchered him underweight just because I was tired of feeding the damn thing.

A single pig just doesn't grow as well. Old timers say it's because they eat more when they feel like there is competition for food. I'll never raise a single pig again. Having the chores every day, might as well have 6-10 if you're going to have 1. If it's' not gaining, it could be wormy, give it a dose of ivomec if you're not eating it for a month or so.

He was delicious though.

It doesn't have to be fed out to 220lbs to roast on a spit or a ground pit....

Mo, That Hog should be pushin 450-500 pounds if it's a year old.

If a gilt isn't 270 pounds by 230 days of age I consider the genetics to be undesireable. Plus the fact thats it's a hamp cross.

i figured as much, except for the last part. He can have his pet half and ill eat mine.......shit, hes so stoopid i may never get any of this across to him. lol.

I was just thinking of things that might keep them from putting on weight. I went through very similar frustration last year. The conclusion was the lead dose and pork chop solution.

When I griped about it, the old timers all said a single pig never does well.

Weird Al Yankovik advised us on this matter in the year of our Lord, 1985....Just eat it, eat it eat it..
