Around 4:30, I thought I heard fireworks....

turns out that there was a shoot-out between three police officers and and suspect. It was just reported that one of the officers died. I used to live at the other end of the street it happened on, and currently live just a few blocks away.

Strange to see it in a familiar area, much less in Rapid.

Not too surprised to see this in that neighborhood. There were some great people that lived there, but there were also some that weren't.

Wow! It is a small world. The crime rate in this particular neighborhood is actually really low now. All of the "bad" things are more apt to happen on the other side of Maple.

A Native American male in his 20s is the suspected shooter. Police didn't release his name Tuesday night because of uncertainty about the suspect's real identity, Police Chief Steve Allender said.
This is going to sound racist as hell....but it really doesn't surprise me.

I know what you mean.... it would have surprised me less though if it had happened down near Rapid Creek instead of in a housing area.

After living in South Dakota for 12 years.....and being friends with plenty of people from the reservations......I've determined that young Native American males have to be the most angry people ever. JFC.

Update

A seemingly routine police stop turned into a deadly shootout in a North Rapid neighborhood late Tuesday afternoon that killed one Rapid City police officer and wounded two other officers and the gunman.

It also left the Rapid City law-enforcement community stunned and saddened at the loss of Officer James Ryan McCandless, 28, the first city police officer shot dead in the line of duty since 1916.

Update

The shooter is dead.

I was talking to some friends that work at the hospital today and they were saying (keep in mind - that this is not "official"). The three officers were talking to the 4 guys for about 10 minutes when the shooter pulled the gun and started shooting. I still haven't heard any rumors as to why these guys were pulled over to begin with.
