Against Me! singer Tom Gabel reveals plans to begin living as a woman in the new issue of Rolling Stone. Gabel, who has dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years, will soon begin the process of transition, by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.

Gabel will eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to her wife Heather. "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," says Gabel. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

Gabel only told a handful of family and friends about her plan to transition before talking to Rolling Stone. Because this is the first time a major rock star has come out as transgender, the singer made a point of speaking openly about it. "I'm going to have embarrassing moments," says Gabel, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."

The full story of Gabel's transformation is in the latest issue, on newsstands this Friday (May 11th). In it, the singer tells Josh Eells about her history of gender dysphoria, the specifics of the transition process and what becoming Laura Jane Grace will mean for the future of Against Me!

You dont have to understand. I think thats what is holding our society back from just accepting these fellow human beings into "our" society and they no longer see themselfs as outsiders.

I, we, the government have no right whatsoever to decide what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own bedroom. It's time we just accept them for what they truly are. You are not going to turn gay because its accepted by society. Either you are gay or not. You might hide it from society but I believe that you are gay or not. Gay people dont deserve second class citizen status.

This. It's genetically wired. Like the subject of the OP, I know a guy who is gay and has always felt so. He says, with the earliest memories he has (around 5, same as this guy), he remembers being gay.

Loved this band since the first time that I heard them. They couldn't be nicer people.
It seems obvious now as you look back through his lyrics, there are clues everywhere.

I'm actually pretty stoked to potentially see them in Omaha later this month.

I have two friends, Katie and Addie, who have been together for 8+ years. High school sweethearts. Back in high school, Addie was Adam. But she definitely knew what her gender was back then, and that it didn't match up with her sex. About three years ago, Addie began hormone treatment to feminize her features and voice and etc.; no surgery. Katie was/has been/is accepting of the whole process.

Katie would be forgiven if she wasn't, but she's been there every step of the way as a loving partner. I don't know how someone can have the courage that Katie has. Real love is real love, I guess. I think Katie is one of the best people I know.

Thats kind of my point. You like the music. You dont quit liking the music based on whether the singer likes penis's, vagina's or both. That shouldnt matter. You like the music or not.

yeah, you might have to explain why that guy is kissing the other guy to your 5 year old. But, thats not a bad thing. We are about diversity in this country. We may not have a desire to kiss a guy in private or public who are we to say no one else should have that desire?
