Football Jeff Fisher ... how does he have a job? - Page 2

Ok, so with the loss yesterday - Fisher has now tied Landry for 2nd most career losses as a coach. 162 ... and Fisher did that in 82 FEWER games than Landry.

Fisher has coached for 22 years - 173 wins / 162 losses / 1 tie

22 seasons and only 6 (six) with a finish above .500.

1999-2003 was his greatest run with 32% of his career wins in that 5 year window. And, 4 of his 6 years above .500 in that timeframe. 50% of his seasons have ended with 7 or fewer wins.

Fisher hasn't been above .500 since 2008 ... honestly, how is he still a head coach in the NFL?

I don't know, but I remember him being a VERY popular candidate on this forum when he was available (KC had just fired Haley I think). They also kept spelling it 'Fischer' for some reason.

Which makes no sense, given he's basically a career 7-9 coach. I thought KC fans wanted more than that.

Well that's a really stupid way to look at it.

If you take out his 6 worst seasons and his record is 138-101, which is pretty damn good. You don't get to just subtract a guy's best seasons and then call him shit.

As for why he's still coaching, the answer is pretty obvious - his worst seasons are largely just 'meh' and not atrocious. The guy wins about 3 games every year that he has seemingly no business winning. So for as seemingly awful has he's been, the fact that he has 2 more 10+ win seasons than he has 10+ loss seasons buys him some rope. And in his 21 complete seasons, he's only had 2 seasons where he didn't get to 6 wins. The Chiefs did that 5 times in a 7 year stretch.

I mean that's damning with faint praise at best, but the question was asked and that's the answer. Fisher's teams never truly suck out loud and for many owners, that's good enough. It puzzles me as his teams are not only mediocre but they're also boring as **** so I'm not sure how an owner sees that as a good thing, but that's absolutely why.

Oh, and the fact that the Rams Executive Vice President of Football Operations & Chief Operating Officer (Kevin Demoff) is Fisher's agent's son probably doesn't hurt...

If you'd dig around before Andy was hired there were A LOT of mother****ers who wanted him. The dumb**** picks were as follows:

Jeff Fisher
Bill Cowher
John (Not Jay, who's actually a coach) Gruden

I'd have probably dumped my fandom if that happened. Those are just unfathomable choices. Fisher would probably be better than the guys out of football, but not by a lot.

Fisher is THAT bad. He's one of those "football guys" that does inexplicably stupid shit and everybody justifies it away because "It's football" and he's a "football guy." Miraculously the douche still has a job (With a shiny new extension!)

It just goes to show, that you have to just be better than average and you'll look kick ****ing ass because there are still teams that hire Jeff Fisher.

He had to use Kerry Collins because he was force fed Vince Young. You can't knock him for that and not give him credit for McNair. And around 2004 the Titans were in a disastrous cap situation. Probably one of the worst cases of cap mismanagement in the cap era. They pretty much had to completely dismantle a contender. Lost McNair, Kearse, etc, etc. I'm on my phone so I can't post a link but this isn't hard to research. They were in financial purgatory through the mid 2000s.

That 2008 team had eight Pro Bowlers, and six of them were 28 or under. Chris Johnson, Haynesworth, etc. They did a legit complete rebuild.

I will agree that he was forced to have Young as his QB because insane Bud Adams wanted him. However, I will point out that Fisher wanted Cutler drafted and what a winner he turned out to be.

As for the 2008 team, yeah a lot of Pro Bowlers on that team that did jack squat. I've lived in Nashville for the past 13 years and have watched TN go through multiple re-builds.

Fisher lived off one SB run and a fan base that was new to pro football and pro sports overall. He benefited from a fan base that didn't demand much from it's pro teams and seemed to be OK with mediocrity, which basically Jeff Fisher in a nutshell.

It's those middle ten years that have given him so much rope. He had six 10 win seasons in a ten year period, which is really good when you have the cap problems they had in the middle of that run. He's been completely mediocre in LA, but I argue his Tennessee record isn't bad. A lot of teams would kill for that kind of stretch. He's definitely not as good of a coach as Marty though.

I wonder what life would have been like for TN with Cutler... the guy went through so much change (coaches, etc) in the first many years of his career. 51-51 as a starter in CHI and 17-20 in DEN.

Who knows, maybe Fisher and Cutler could have done some good things in TEN.

It's a retread league. You have people like Norv Turner and Marc Trestman and on and on and on who keep getting hired because they're "low-risk" hires. They're also low-reward hires. No one is willing to take a chance.

While it didn't work out well, I was very impressed that Clark Hunt took a chance on Todd Haley. It was a high-risk, high-reward move. It didn't work, but that's how you occasionally hit on a great coach.

Totally agree... and whichever team takes that next chance on someone like McDaniels... they'll likely be rewarded. I'm sure he's learned so much from that experience and returning to the OC role in the last 6 seasons.
