As a general guideline I'd tell people to watch the movies instead of the books if you could only do one for the LOTR series. The movies do so much to bring some of the key battles to life; they're really stellar. It's one of the few instance that I think you get a little more from the movies than the books. But the elves and the ents are much more interesting characters in the books than the movies. And if my memory serves the books lean into Gandalf a lot more heavily than they do Aragorn or even Frodo. But it's been a bit so I can't swear that's actually an accurate memory.
