Changes to the read option

I searched and didn't see this being discussed anywhere. Sorry if it has. But it feels like our offense includes this technique, A LOT!

A new rule for 2023:

To make handing the football forward a penalty like an illegal forward pass, proposed by the Competition Committee

Rule change: This will penalize teams handing off the football forward on a read-option, for example, or any other running play a penalty. Handoffs will have to be made next to or behind the quarterback, not in front of.

Maybe the concern is underpaid RBs get knocked on their ass when they do not have the ball.

Maybe rule change is to avoid defense assigning one player to RB and another player to QB and knocking both on their ass when only one has the ball.

Maybe the idea is if there are all these rules protecting QBs and defenses should be able to blast a QB after a handoff, but will probably get a personal foul if they do.

I think we may be reading a little more into this than there is. If the QB turns his back to the LOS and hands the ball off, technically he's handing the ball forward. I think it means towards the LOS. Maybe it's just worded poorly (not like that hasn't ever happened before).

I heard a discussion on the radio about blocks on the RPO plays, they called it a crack back block, but it's not. But the defenders are complaining because they have to watch for the handoff and are therefore unable to see the block coming in low. This change sounds like an effort to address that problem to me

I think you have all swallowed the hook. The rule change only applies to ineligible players or handoffs forward of the line of scrimmage last I heard. Which changes nothing.

Maybe you're right, but this text is off the article on CBSSports.com (and in the OP):

"Rule change: This will penalize teams handing off the football forward on a read-option, for example, or any other running play a penalty. Handoffs will have to be made next to or behind the quarterback, not in front of."

Don't see anything about being ineligible or downfield. Your interpretation also sounds like an unneeded and dumb rule but at least it would have the benefit of having virtually zero impact.
