Nate Taylor: Chiefs targeting OT Ronnie Stanley in free agency

Quote:
When free agency begins, the Chiefs will target Ronnie Stanley, the nine-year veteran who is the best left tackle available on the market, according to sources. Stanley, who will turn 31 this month, started all 17 season games last season for the Baltimore Ravens. He earned a 70.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus and allowed just three sacks.

Veach is going to agree to a contract for a LT tomorrow, which then allows him to go to the Bank of Mahomes for the exact amount. Wonder if Mahomes would be like, hey Bart, here's a little extra for my my boy Justin Reed.

I don't get it at all.

Why would you prefer to put yourself in a position that forces you to take a LT at 31? This draft class is just like the free agency class. There are more options than people think, but not a lot of value.

The best way to get value is overpay for a little at LT and then get value in the draft on the DL and at RB.
Those guys had a hard-on for taking Donovan Jackson in the 1st round.

They've lost the plot.

Structure would mean a TON.

I mean if you get Moore on a deal that essentially pays him, say, $20 million over the first 2 seasons and then $40 million over the following 2 seasons, you're essentially signing him for a 2 year deal with team options if he proves to be a credible LT.

You take a little bit of risk in those first 2 seasons at $10 million/season, but it's not horrifying.

And in the end, the numbers settle out as "mid-teens" over the 4 years. But if he plays out those 4 years, that mid-teen figure will be a steal.

You're risking a bit in the first couple seasons for a lot of value baked into the deal in the last 2.

Now maybe he does much much better than that. But that's a way that sort of contract could be structured to hit figures that are insane on their face but not too bad when you drill them down.

Jaylon Moore seems like the only guy available who has any chance of outplaying his contract. Almost every other option has a ceiling of “expensive but good enough to get by”.

ESPN nextgen stats has Dan Moore as the #11 tackle in the league in terms of pass block win rate at 93%.

That's one spot higher than Ronnie Stanley, FWIW.
