Bowman needs surgery on ACL but not MCL

American Football - Bowman facing surgery on knee injury
An MRI on San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman has revealed he suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee.

Reuters – 18 hours ago

ESPN.com reported Bowman will have surgery to repair the ACL, but the MCL should heal without an operation.

Bowman is expected to be ready for the start of the 2014 season.

Bowman was injured midway through the fourth quarter after stripping Seahawks wide receiver Jermaine Kearse of the ball near the goal line.
- -
Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he spoke to cornerback Richard Sherman about the comments he made on national television after Seattle's 23-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.

Carroll said on Seattle ESPN radio affiliate Monday, "He's a fiery guy. That was Richard being Richard in a moment where you would like to pull him to the side and take a knee for a while, then we'll talk to you."

After Sherman made a game-saving play by tipping away a pass in the end zone intended for 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree late in the game, he told TV interviewer Erin Andrews, "I'm the best corner in the game. When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that's the result you're gonna get. Don't you ever talk about me."

- -

Carroll said wide receiver Percy Harvin "should be fine" for Super Bowl XLVIII against the Denver Broncos on Feb. 2.
Harvin did not practice last week while recovering from a concussion and did not play in the NFC title game.

- -

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick delivered a scathing, accusatory review of Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker's block on cornerback Aqib Talib in the second quarter that forced Talib out of the game with a knee injury.

"I think it was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib; no attempt to get open," Belichick said. "I'll let the league handle the discipline on that play; it's not for me to decide, but it's one of the worst plays I've seen."

- -
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was selected to the Pro Bowl, the NFL announced.

Luck was named as a replacement for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who will play in Super Bowl XLVIII.
- -

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will replace Julius Thomas of the Denver Broncos on the Pro Bowl roster.

- -
New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle was named to the Pro Bowl, replacing Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas.

- -
The Houston Texans agreed to a three-year contract with Romeo Crennel as their new defensive coordinator.

Crennel was out of the league this season after getting fired as the Kansas City Chiefs coach following the 2012 season.

- -
Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor rehired Drew and Jason Rosenhaus as his new agents, according to NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk.
Last week, Pryor fired agent Jerome Stanley, who accused coach Dennis Allen of setting Pryor up to fail when he reinserted him as the starting quarterback in the regular-season finale against the Super Bowl-bound Denver Broncos.

- -
The Washington Redskins named Ike Hilliard as wide receivers coach.
Hilliard, 37, returns to the Redskins after coaching their wide receivers in 2012. He spent 2013 as wide receivers coach for the Buffalo Bills.

Do ACL's ever heal without surgery? When you sprain an ankle you're basically tearing ligaments and MCL injuries are often left to heal.

What's up with ACL's? Do they usually just completely rupture?

It holds your entire Knee together. Without it, you have zero stability in your knee.

No, they will never heal on their own.

And with an ankle, a sprain is tiny tears in the ligaments. When an Acl goes, it completely rips.

That being said. Bowman is my favorite player in the League. I was heart broken when I saw his knee. From what he came from, to what he overcame, to what he is today, not only as a player, but as a person. sighs.

I felt really bad for that guy. One of the worst injuries I've seen, right up there with Theisman's leg breaking. Just ugly. Hope he gets back to where he was before being hurt.

ACL's can tear and don't always require surgery.

A ruptured ACL can be over come with PT and no surgery, depending on activity level.

ACL's typically suck because the cartilage usually gets teared and that is usually the biggest problem causing ongoing knee problems.

That sure looked like a terrible injury. He's a great player and I hated to see that so late in the season. I can't imagine he'll be back at full speed by week 1.

It depends on what grade of tear it is, they have 3 different grades. I slightly tore mine playing arena football, it was a grade 2 tear and it healed on its own, I didn't need surgery.

A grade 3 tear always requires surgery.

10-15 years ago his career would've been over with but not today, the NFL has the best doctors, trainers and physical therapists. I would bet that he's back playing football by the middle of next season.

Pretty gruesome. I was sure the leg was broken as well.

Everybody is going to use AP as the bar. Its not realistic. He might have to go on the PUP list.
